On September 28, 1991, a pneumonia attack, followed by complications from diabetes that led to two strokes, struck him down at the age of 65 in Santa Monica, California, shortly after his last concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

Admitted to the hospital after the first attack, Miles woke up as the doctors were telling him that they would have to intubate him.

He began to curse at them, ordering them to leave him alone.

The second attack, which occurred at that moment, killed him.
