In the end, Gainsbarre took up all the space. Of Gainsbourg, the refined magician of words, of Serge (actually always and only the little Lucien, the ugly Jewish duckling with the "cabbage head"), the intellectual and all-around artist, the visionary and indefinable musician, no one ever really talks. Everyone remembers the old pig, the drunkard, and the lewd man. Gainsbarre singing about incest with his thirteen-year-old daughter, mocking the flag, lighting a cigarette with a 500 franc note, telling Whitney Houston - live on TV - that he wants to sleep with her.
The myth has taken hold of the artist.
And who knows how it ended with poor Whitney; she would have been - in any case - just another one among many, all beautiful, all forgotten.
But with Jane, it was love.
