Il panorama di Betlemme

A man wounded in the back
crawls across the sand
And he feels the earth that calls him
feels the night about to fall
And he says Lord I beg you
let me breathe
let me rest a while
before I have to die
And he says Lord do you see
this bothersome fly
that flies over my back
and still won’t settle down

A man lying on the ground
in a frontier land
Who looks at the riverbank
slowly turning black
And he says it wasn’t my intention
to steal the bread tree
But I’m not the kind of man
who surrenders without a fight
And now give back my ranks
return to me my command
Because this fly keeps buzzing around
while my blood is draining out

And meanwhile the shadows lengthen
and cover up the clearing
The armies rest
at the end of the day
And the man who is dying
tries to take off his boots
And he says Lord, flies
shouldn’t have wings
And he says Lord do you see
the panorama of Bethlehem
This sky without shelter
this curtain of flames

here’s what else there was back then dear @[iside] The Gang - La lotta continua
For bread and roses
for the life that remains
for all or nothing, here and now
for the voice that still takes risks.
For this smoke rising
for these broken bones
for these days of stone warfare
for these new barricades.
From every corner of this earth
a cry will rise
resurrection insurrection
the struggle will continue
IN NICARAGUA LA LOTTA CONTINUA
IN PALESTINA LA LOTTA CONTINUA
IN SUDAFRICA LA LOTTA CONTINUA
nothing will ever be the same again.
For our happiness
for our colors
since joy and revolution
have returned to our hearts.
For the spilled blood
for the strength that remains
for these fists still raised
for the courage to say enough.
From every corner of this earth
a cry will rise
resurrection insurrection
the struggle will continue
ANCHE IN IRLANDA LA LOTTA CONTINUA
IN PALESTINA LA LOTTA CONTINUA
IN SUDAFRICA LA LOTTA CONTINUA
nothing will ever be the same again.
IN NICARAGUA LA LOTTA CONTINUA
IN PALESTINA LA LOTTA CONTINUA
IN SUDAFRICA LA LOTTA CONTINUA
nothing will ever be the same again.
For this occupied land
for everlasting victory
for this tortured skin
for those who have not given up.
To do and not be done
for Nonsolonero
because we are different but still together
united under this sky.
From every corner of this earth
a cry will rise
resurrection insurrection
the struggle will continue
ANCHE A PALERMO LA LOTTA CONTINUA
INTORNO A NOI LA LOTTA CONTINUA
DENTRO DI NOI LA LOTTA CONTINUA
nothing will ever be the same again
IN SALVADOR LA LOTTA CONTINUA
IN SUDAFRICA LA LOTTA CONTINUA
IN PALESTINALA LOTTA CONTINUA.
Nothing will ever be the same again..

right or wrong, everyone took a stand and showed their face. @[Stanlio] (The only promotional appearance of PALESTINA from the album TANGO by MATIA BAZAR on the Mediaset networks.

The song, an antagonist to Vacanze Romane, B-side of the 45 rpm, always censored—in fact, the most beautiful and fascinating appearance that I’ve remastered in sound without the horrible TV applause, since we were in playback!
ANTONELLA will make the two political nationalist gestures and promptly the director will move the camera away to a general shot.
I play the keyboard of the Apple computer, which I had specially designed to be external to the main body of the machine, an absolute novelty for the time, of course almost a meaningless gesture, because 40 years ago there was no MIDI communication protocol between keyboard/computer.

Of course Mike Bongiorno, vice-president of Mediaset, scolded us for these two gestures, in his view not exportable to a populist TV.

Cinema, but not just Cinema!

“We watch, incredulous and powerless, the torment of a genocide carried out live by the State of Israel in Palestine.

Yet, as the spotlight turns to the Venice Film Festival, we risk witnessing yet another major event impermeable to this human, civil, and political tragedy.

The show must go on, we are told, urging us to look away—as if the ‘world of cinema’ had nothing to do with the ‘real world.’”

So reads the letter addressed to the Venice Biennale and the Film Festival (set to begin on Wednesday, August 27) and signed by around a thousand directors, filmmakers, actors, actresses, journalists, and audiovisual professionals.

Among the best-known signatories, some of the key figures of Italian cinema, are Marco Bellocchio (who will present his series Portobello at the festival), Mario Martone, Valeria Golino, Pietro Marcello (his Duse in competition), Matteo Garrone, Alice and Alba Rohrwacher, Toni Servillo, Laura Morante, Jasmine Trinca, the D’Innocenzo brothers.

There are also some international names such as Margarethe von Trotta, Céline Sciamma, Abel Ferrara, Eyal Sivan.

THE LETTER originates from a platform called Venice4Palestine, which is calling for a stronger stance from the institutions regarding the responsibilities for the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

So far, the Biennale’s response has been brief: neither the artistic director of the festival, Alberto Barbera, nor the president, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, have spoken publicly.

Only a statement from the press office in which the Biennale describes itself as “open to dialogue”:
far too little, according to the promoters of the initiative, who wrote in their open letter:
“We urge all sectors of culture and information to use their image and their means, on the occasion of the Festival, to create a constant background of words and initiatives: so that the voice of truth never falters regarding ethnic cleansing, apartheid, the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories, colonialism, and all the crimes against humanity committed by Israel for decades and not just since October 7.

We invite those working in cinema to imagine, coordinate, and carry out together, during the Festival, actions that give resonance to dissent against pro-Zionist government policies: a dissent expressed through creativity.”

Today is the last day of vacation, tomorrow we go back home, and this is the only song I know, although very sad, set in Sestri Levante.

EMIgration Song

I met and saw the Moke (Dutch) live on the occasion of a Paul Weller concert where they were the opening act, I think it was 2008 or thereabouts.
I only know their debut album, this Shorland.
