Cantaloupe Island (Remastered 1999/Rudy Van Gelder Edition)
When Herbert Jeffrey Hancock (Herbie to friends) recorded "Cantaloupe Island" in June '64, he was already well on his way to becoming one of the jazz superstars we know today.
He already had 3 critically acclaimed solo albums under his belt, and just a year earlier "Watermelon Man" had made it into the Top Ten of the US pop charts; to top it all off, the twenty-four-year-old pianist from Chicago was also a member of what was probably the most important and innovative group in Contemporary Jazz, namely the "Miles Davis Quintet".
