Listen to the rhythmic games that produce duets like those of Geddy Lee and Neil Peart in Rush, and you'll notice that Dream Theater are very static, very square, tied to very rigid patterns.

Zarathustra, I don't blame those who criticize Dream Theater for the technical aspect. There are ways and ways to be technical. Even the Guitar Pro software is technical. Let's take a drummer like Portnoy as an example. If you listen to other brilliant drummers first, like Neil Peart, Dave Weckl, or Mark Zonder, you'll notice that Portnoy plays in a more sterile, more academic way; he has LESS DYNAMICS. Compositional-wise, the Dream Theater are very skilled, but due to their lack of attention to dynamics (and sometimes even to sound), they risk flattening beautiful compositions. The bassist, for instance: Myung. Do you think it's good taste to put a solo like that horrendous piece of crap right in the middle of Metropolis, like that?
