Father Murphy ..And He Told Us To Turn To The Sun
Voto:
"I believe that any live group inevitably pays the price for the absence of bass." I agree, it would be needed, perhaps played in an unconventional way (something minimal and heavily effected), but it would complete the sound, at least for the concerts.
Beat Circus Dreamland
Voto:
One of my favorite albums of the last few years. Colorful, rural yet cultured, it spans from klezmer to the most American folk with incredible continuity, passing through jazz and almost Pattonian experimentation. It feels like the musical transposition of a Fellini film, or rather, a Kusturica one.

I happened to see them live yesterday because I was at the Black Dice concert in Padova. Unfortunately, they played for such a short time that I couldn't get a comprehensive idea (20 minutes). They seem heavily stylistically skewed towards a sort of psychedelic mantra, halfway between sacred liturgy and childish delirium. A lot of post-rock, perhaps too few expressive and emotional chances for the listener. Nice guitar sound (he had an Electro-Harmonix pedal that I think is the Holy Grail and he used it very well), the drummer's minimal setup was bizarre, and the keyboardist-noise maker was not very impactful. Overall, for now, they receive a passing grade.
Depeche Mode Sounds Of The Universe
Voto:
Embarrassing album, for me not a single track is worth saving. But as usual, just because it says "Depeche Mode" on the front, there will be people ready to praise it. Playing the Angel was much better.

Really quite a nice problem these ones thrown in randomly, yes yes.

I liked "Transparent Things" quite a bit some time ago, but now I realize that I have no desire to pull it out again to listen to it, I don't know. This has totally disappointed me.

Phil Manzanera, Bill MacCormick, Charles Hayward? Canterbury sound? I'm rushing to get it.
U2 Achtung Baby
Voto:
U2 give me an itch in my balls, they’ll never be my thing. Beyond that, I think Achtung Baby is their last decent album; the ones that followed (including the latest) repeat the exact same features that the U2 sound has always been made of, trying to update them to the times we live in, and ultimately coming off as pathetic. I give it a 3, a mix between the 4 it might deserve and the 2 I’m giving it, because when Bono starts singing with that super lyrical and drawn-out style of his, I feel like becoming a serial killer. The review, who knows, says the same old tired things.
Julie's Haircut Our Secret Ceremony
Voto:
I really liked Julie's haircut with the previous album, so I'm very curious to listen to this one now. When it comes to Esterofilia or Italianofilia, the discussion is always the same: it's about listening to what you like without your enjoyment being influenced by whether an album comes out in Italy, the USA, or Madagascar. Supporting Italian music just because it's Italian seems wrong to me, as silly as Esterofilia; I've already stated my thoughts in the review of "Il paese è reale." Let's consider that Italy accounts for roughly 0.1 percent of global music traffic.
AA.VV. Il Paese E' Reale - 19 Artisti per un Paese Migliore?
Voto:
I only expressed my opinion, gustavotanz; if you can manage it mentally, you can criticize it, no one is stopping you. I believe that Italian independent groups would need something different from this operation, maybe positioning themselves in a more "international" context, abandoning the primary perspective of the Italic audience. I don’t understand the point of making the general public aware of one’s existence if doing so means trivializing one’s image just like it happened with XL, turning everything into a scoop. XL that boasts about having discovered Fabri Fibra in the indie scene, huh, wow, what a talent scout. I will spend my money on buying the new album by Uochi Toki, but not because they are Italian and independent, but because they are good.
