forget the electric wizard, psycho. the crippled black phoenix are a creature of justin greaves but I don’t think they have much to do with his old band. he wanted to do something different (and apparently had been planning it for quite some time). I find that even the mogwai don’t really fit.

If you write a review on Mogwai, I’ll "kick your ass" on Mogwai; if you write a review on Crippled Black Phoenix, the album I've listened to the most in the last few months, I’ll "kick your ass" on Crippled Black Phoenix. The album doesn’t seem like a sham to me. Maybe you’ve set your expectations too high because of Justin Greaves and Dominic Aitchison (but I don’t see why you wouldn’t like Mogwai). It’s something "different" and enjoyable, and that’s enough for me.

First of all, the cover is wrong. This is the one from the 10" of sharks and storms and not from the album. And then, useless? There are many albums far more useless than this one. This is a strange bastard, suspended between The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (the one by Coleridge that the esteemed colleague Targetski mentioned and the one by Iron Maiden) and Pink Floyd, passing through The Decemberists and Dickens. The music seems anything but stripped down... the outro of Blizzard of Horned Cats literally makes my hair stand on end. It may not be a masterpiece, but I think it’s a great album; Justin Greaves has done a really nice job. "Endtime Ballads," as he calls them. Definitely a fitting description.

I haven't seen all of Miyazaki's films, but I doubt anything can surpass the dreamlike tenderness of Lupin III and The Castle of Cagliostro. A masterpiece.
