And to think it was that crazy Tabba in a t-shirt who introduced me to Distant Smile. Beautiful.

Nick, but how many concerts have we been to together without knowing it? At first, I found them a bit challenging, but it was just a matter of getting into the mindset. Baroque, right? Overly intricate. "too late or too dead" and "silver and snow" above all.

You made everything disappear. You made Jeff Klein (the New Yorker with the wrinkled jacket) disappear, who opened the concert alone with his guitar against a thousand technical problems, only to switch to the piano and be rescued on the fly by Scott Ford, Bobby MacIntyre, and Dave Rosser with an improvised jam. You made the thousand "official" covers disappear (Too Tough to Die by Martina Topley-Bird, Where Did You Sleep Last Night, Amazing Grace) and those slipped in between the songs (The Joker by the Steve Miller Band, I'm on Fire by Bruce Springsteen, even Wolf Like Me by TV on the Radio and Killing Moon by Echo and the Bunnymen!), you made King Only and Fat City disappear that brought tears to my eyes. That’s not fair.

Can you believe that a few months ago I saw Willem Dafoe wandering around near Piazza Vittorio, in Rome, with his shopping bags…
