A thoroughly sick tale that oozes decay above (and below) the lines, it is nonetheless one of my favorite stories by His Unnameable HPL, along with "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward." An ironic tone, perhaps a bit too much, when talking about Them—it’s not something to joke about, lest you risk discovering blasphemous crossbreeds with cursed creatures among your ancestors!
Black Sabbath Vol 4

The evaluation is ungrateful; after producing 3 albums that made history, a slight drop in "tension," if we want to call it that, is understandable. I consider it a good album, and after all, progressive was such a strong current at that time that experimenting with new paths and challenging oneself is "justifiable." If the result is "Vol.4" - followed by SBS, which even features a prog standard-bearer like Rick Wakeman - I would say our guys hit the target.

Received a bit imprecise, but I agree. One of my absolute favorite albums.

Black Sabbath Born In The Studio

Very interesting, I only know the "original" album and I don't mind it, especially for Iommi's sulfurous solos and Gillan's screams. The story of the ruined mix due to humidity is also interesting, but in the end it is "functional" to the album and to the atmosphere that pervades it!

Beautiful, intricate, flamboyant…! Once again I say: great Barlow on the drums!
