Listening to them again, they strike me as a serious, dark, sad, melancholic, nocturnal, and slowed-down version of Camper Van Beethoven... One could say that the CVB made folk for the hardcore generation, while Calexico makes folk for the post-rock generation... Yes, that's fine...

13 impeccable melodies; 13 genius arrangements. Brian Wilson has set a standard. He invented a form of "chamber pop" (the paradox of paradoxes). It’s a disc that is pure, unblemished, transparent, dreamlike, suspended, timeless, where any style adopted seems transposed into a state of trance, transfigured into a bittersweet exploration of the fate of the American Dream. Emotionally stirring and, despite the sumptuous instrumentation, not at all redundant or pretentious. The songs go straight to the heart, leaving a vivid afterglow. Perhaps the best pop possible. Ah, I almost forgot: Blackcrow, sincere compliments for this wonderful review.

Thank you, Regular! ;-) The Rapeman had some influence on grunge (especially with the opening track), but I believe that noise and math were the two genres of the 90s most affected by this extraordinary "Two Nuns." Get them, you'll see you'll like them (eventually, perhaps, because they are less immediate than Big Black).
