Tangerine Dream Zeit

The feeling of boredom that one might experience while listening to an album often depends on the listener's predisposition. It is clear that Zeit is not exactly an album to listen to six times a day; when you decide to take on the challenging task of listening to it, you must somehow know what you're getting into... Let me explain: I don’t listen to Bad Religion with the same spirit (or the same frequency) as I listen to Zeit... With Bad Religion, it’s 30 minutes of intense, engaging listening, without any phases of stillness... With Zeit, instead, it’s about putting the record in the player, hitting Play, and doing something else (reading, chatting, sleeping, watching a documentary on Discovery Channel without audio, dreaming). Because Zeit IS AMBIENT MUSIC, environmental music, music for environments; it’s not music made to engage but to envelop... Don’t you think?

I'm listening to it right now for the first time. I have a feeling this is one of those albums to play in the dead of night, to fall asleep... ;-) Remarkable review for its measure and clarity.

Nice little disc. My favorites: Last Exit and Corduroy, perfect blends of rough guitar riffs and raw melodies, the essence of grunge... I'm not crazy about the ballads, which nonetheless have left their mark... The digressions (Davanita, Bugs, Pry) are amusing, even though I've always raised more than an eyebrow at the habit of people from Seattle to stick the psychedelic/noisy/"experimental" track at the end of albums (you know the "ghost track" on Nevermind?), hidden away where no one can notice it (so to speak...)... It has always been said that PJ have nothing to do with indie rock: it's true, all things considered, because PJ played a classic rock style, anchored in the 70s, but it is also true that "Spin the Black Circle" closely resembles (in riff, rhythm, and vocals) "Behind the Threshold" by Husker Du... A round of applause, finally, to the reviewer. :-)

I'm very intrigued by "I Zimbra," especially because of the lyrics; musically, I picture it as a sort of "Great Curve," a nice funky track with African choruses on top... Ah, I side with Jimbo :-)

Wow Trell! You amaze me more and more every day... I mean, what a culture you have! No, really, let’s all bow down before this well of linguistic knowledge... But seriously... No, I’m saying this sincerely, I’m not just buttering you up... But now you have to tell me what language is spoken in the Western Samoa Islands, or else you’re getting a fail until September... ;-PPP
