mmm...maybe this review is a bit too brief...there's one sentence that leaves me perplexed: "John Stabb has a clean and moderate voice, stylistically very close to Bob Mould" <<< but Mould didn't seem to have a clean and moderate voice, quite the opposite...he was very raspy...

Calm Psycho: Meet and Not Available have NOTHING to do with metal! :-) Zion, it’s probably a coincidence, but the way the first 6/7 tracks of this album are connected reminds me a lot of the way house music DJs mix tracks together.

Walter, when I have time I will try to post the link to the interview with Ian McKay (Fugazi), where (if I remember correctly) he states that when he is dead he would prefer to have 5 of his fans at his funeral rather than 5 dollars earned from his music (because, let’s remember, in rock music, the equation is success=fame=MONEY: let’s NEVER forget that!). Anyway, it’s true that music is communication, but you can communicate even to a small but loyal audience. In fact, I believe that communication should be something sincere and genuine, which is often not the case when you find yourself "communicating" in front of masses drawn to a concert perhaps just because of the advertising hype (I personally know people who go to see Vasco and U2 knowing only 2 songs from their respective bands, just to "participate in the event"). The communication that bands like Fugazi do in front of a few dozen boys and girls who love the band and couldn’t care less if it’s a niche group is much more AUTHENTIC.

well...I detest Beer Festivals, I don't hang out at Social Centers, but I love bands like Fugazi (one of the many groups that have never dreamed of "breaking into the mainstream"). I also don't understand why until 20 years ago, the charts were indicative of a band's quality and now they aren't? What happened in the last 20 years? And anyway, pop certainly didn't explode in the '80s! Pop has always been there...Pop has existed since the recording industry has existed...And "rock" (guitar-oriented, as Walter means it) had a certain success in the '80s, with AOR and pop-metal, and in the '90s, with grunge, punk-pop, and nu-metal...

@ajeje...I read some of your comments on the other reviews of the Residents...Zappa and the critique of modern society...Lynch and surrealism...yes, I agree...the Residents as the collective subconscious of our times...

"Music should not reach 'the people,' but 'the heart of the people.'" <<< very beautiful and very true this phrase, Aniel. :-)

Vegetable, you got it: an elusive group. A thunderous debut, on par with Not Available (which is more essential, though). The first part has a sound montage that reminds me of house music. Rest Aria and Spotted seem to come straight out of a silent movie from the 20s. Infant Tango at certain moments is ahead by 20 years and more for its time. Skratz is already Slint-like... What an album! Timeless.

Walter, the comparison between the patronage of past centuries and the entertainment and media industry of the 20th century is untenable: the latter is much more powerful and influential (also because, in the times of Raphael or Mozart, there was no "mass" as a "consumer of music"). Moreover, it is true that today’s audience is quite lobotomized, but certain advertising promotion mechanisms claimed victims even in the glorious years of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. @ London: for me, we should use the generic term "popular music" to include different genres such as rock, electronic, dance, folk, etc.
