Charles Mingus Oh Yeah
Voto:
It's not my favorite by Mingus, but still, he's a genius.
The Smiths The Queen Is Dead
Voto:
This is a great album and, objectively speaking, it holds up very well in a potential comparison with "Murmur" by R.E.M. However, I don't think it’s fair to compare it to "Daydream Nation" because it's a completely different kind of rock (at that point, you might as well compare it to something free jazz and then it really doesn’t make sense...). You might say it's a band of singles, and I almost agree, but the quality of the singles is more than enough to make it one of the most memorable bands of the '90s. Your argument is reasoned, but I think it doesn't stand up very well.
Pulp We Love Life
Voto:
In my opinion, this is definitely not one of the best albums by Pulp. Their masterpiece for me is "This is Hardcore" and not "Different Class" or "His 'n' Hers," which are not bad either. And I really don't think there's anything morriconian anywhere in Pulp, leave poor Ennio alone.
George Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue - Piano Concerto in F - An American in Paris
Voto:
Beautiful page and great Gershwin. For me, there is no doubt, even though jazz-inspired, Rhapsody in Blue is classical music because it is a written score and there is no improvisation (that someone later improvised over it is another story, just as some have done with Bach).
Ali Farka Toure with Ry Cooder Talking Timbuktu
Voto:
Great Ali Farka, I've only listened to his self-titled album, which is indeed extraordinary! Blues straight from the source. As always, well done Odradek.
Bob Dylan Time Out Of Mind
Voto:
Truly beautiful, I much prefer it to "Love and Theft." The piece "Highlands" is, in my opinion, the most beautiful thing Dylan has written since "Blind Willie McTell."
Young Marble Giants Colossal Youth
Voto:
As usual, a great review Odradek.
Paolo Conte Un gelato al limon
Voto:
great album, but I’m not so fond of the review
Georges Brassens La mauvaise réputation
Voto:
The first review of Georges Brassens! He was truly great; not to mention that if you listen to the early De André, it almost feels like a plagiarism from this songwriter (by the way, now that you mention it, "Tutti morimmo a stento" also draws from Villon...). I actually only have the collection in two CDs "Les copains d'abord." I would appreciate some recommendations; limiting ourselves to 2 or 3, which do you think are the most essential albums by this songwriter? I only know 4 songs from this album, but they are enough to give it a 5...
Frank Zappa We're Only In It For The Money
Voto:
The cover of this is indeed too funny! However, I don't think it's among Zappa's best works, but good job, Charlie.
