They have practically reinvented ska; just for this, they deserve a 5.

I don’t know them well, but they seemed to me like a metal and gothic version of the Grateful Dead... definitely very particular.

Stripped of considerations about grunge, the review is very well written, and I have to correct the score I gave in the past: even if many of your points I would have made for "it's a shame about ray," here for me they had already cashed in, without much imagination. One last thing. When you say that England was hostile to flannel shirts, you have a short memory. Surely by around 1993, the English started to get fed up with all these dominant American bands, and various newspapers and industry insiders prepared the ground for Britpop by inventing the new wave of new wave, a phenomenon you surely know very well. BUT once upon a time, dear Francis, the British press went crazy for grunge. The first worldwide magazine to dedicate a cover to grunge was Melody Maker in 1989, Mudhoney were real stars in the UK, and even Nirvana were more popular in England than in the States. In fact, Cobain in 1990 said, "Maybe we're more popular in England because there's the same miserable climate as Seattle." And to top it off, NME declared Nevermind album of the year in 1991... a bit like ten years later, the British press would go wild for the (definitely less noble) Strokes and White Stripes. Cycles of rock historiography... goodbye!

Thank you all for the comments: I notice that "ritual" has received all the votes from 1 to 5, which is a sign that it's a group that always evokes strong emotions and interesting discussions. @hugoniot. I'm sorry that this album makes you puke: de-gustibus! However, from your review of the Meat Puppets, it’s clear that you enjoy delving into a musical period in which, whether you like it or not, Jane's Addiction were fundamental, especially according to almost all the musicians of that time. I would love to delve deeper... @io sono interista. I hate Inter, but I hate you even more for having had the chance to see them at the peak of their career! Bastard! @burns. Soothing suggestion: I'm off to bed now and will fall asleep to the notes of "Classic Girl." Bye.

Even though I'm not a follower of Britpop, I find it interesting.

I've been thoroughly fed up with them, but they've written important pages in Italian rock... they should have stopped after the excellent "Che Cosa Vedi."
