WELL. Brilliant review for a brilliant record.

Well, Rick, your last comment is already very different from the previous one... at least now you recognize the importance of Nirvana, which, I repeat, I don't like at all, but I give credit to what they have objectively done, that is, given a groundbreaking turn to a literally infinite scene of life (barring some underground exceptions). As for the "philological" aspect, it's clear that everyone can find "a hint" in artists even much earlier, but Hendrix was not among Cobain's immediate references. If you adopt this type of viewpoint, practically all bands owe everything to everyone, and in my opinion, it doesn’t hold much weight. Regarding genius, there's no question that Hendrix was an incredibly more complete musician than Cobain, but in extremely different ways, I think both were genius in their own right. And then, personal tastes are what they are, and they should be respected, of course.

Sure, if philology is an art of this kind, we can say that the masters of classical music had already said everything centuries earlier without paling. For Bluesman: because do you know any mainstream musical phenomenon that isn’t commercial? Christ, what clichés. Of course, the musical landscape of rock before grunge was indeed fertile and brilliant, especially for those who want something more than carefreeness and silliness in rock—let's say for those who consider music an art on par with painting or poetry. P.S.: ah Rick, I have no prejudices against cabaret music, I like it.

Don't you think grunge was a revolution? It seems that the history of rock is a matter of opinion... denying historical evidence in favor of one's own tastes is a decidedly sad operation, the classic revisionism of critics with a flair for the spotlight. As for Hendrix, I know him very well, and let me say that he has nothing to do with Cobain. His references were quite different, see the Pixies. A lot of people here on Debaser must think by exclusion: if one is genius, the other who expresses himself in an opposite or different way is crap. It's a way of thinking typical of today's society; perhaps it makes them feel more secure in their beliefs, I don’t know. As far as I'm concerned, both Hendrix and Cobain were extremely important and brilliant, more Hendrix than Cobain, of course, but both are essential for musical evolution. Not recognizing the merits of musicians of such caliber when they don't align with our sensibility, I repeat, is ridiculous.

Mozart had already said everything 3 centuries earlier. What am I saying, Pierluigi da Palestrina had said everything 5 centuries earlier. So what’s the point of playing? Everything has already been said; let’s all just kill ourselves, poor epigones. (Hendrix-Nirvana bothers me a bit though: do you even know what you’re talking about, or are you just blowing hot air without connecting the dots?)

And then, Farfarello - if your measure of judgment is technique, I believe you still have much to listen to. Art is not judged by the number of words, notes, or colors, but by the ability to express metaphors, create atmospheres, shock, disturb, or fill existence with new meanings. Fake music - created on the drawing board, call it what you want - is the furthest thing from all this. It only serves to cash in on money, not to achieve artistic dignity. If the two could go hand in hand, it would be the best, but it happens rarely; another question to ask is this - why?

The fact is that Nirvana changed the history of rock forever, while Motley Crue were killing it, along with other nice people like Poison, just to mention a few good guys...ask yourselves why and you'll understand a lot of things. I rate Nirvana, and grunge as a whole, a 3 out of 10, but not recognizing the merits of brilliant musicians like these, whether we like them or not, is always a sign of arrogance and ignorance, guys...it's something you'll understand with time, don't worry.
