he doesn't put samples because this band doesn't even exist and therefore the record doesn’t exist. If the review were funny it might make sense, but it’s not, so I don’t understand what the point is.

You are absolutely right, philosopher, I made a big mistake. I was referring to another album by Gastr Del Sol, namely Upgrade and Afterlife, which indeed starts with a track much closer to ambient... it happens with burned CDs, pardon :) I am not familiar with this album.

It's the only one I have from Gastr Del Sol. I like it a bit but nothing more; I admit I’ve never really appreciated it fully, maybe because it’s too experimental, maybe because the same things, as you say in your review, have been done better... or maybe because I just can’t grasp it. "A Watery Kentucky," for instance, seems to me overly deconstructed and alienated (by the way, when you say “with a frozen voice, far too calm and devoid of any pathos,” do you mean that imperceptible wail that you can hear towards the end of the piece? :)), far beyond Slint, it’s much closer to ambient music than to the post-rock of Tortoise or others. Everything feels too unravelled and also a bit tedious. I don’t know... I’ll give it another listen... the review, which I like, gives me a different perspective on it.

But indeed...let’s say it’s a real banger one one! Tom Verlaine has recently released not one but two solo albums on Thrill Jockey...just to throw in some tidbit...

really great pretazzo, I know it's a "blasphemy" but I prefer Shellac. I could always change my mind though :)
