The issue you raise is true but only if read in the opposite light. That Hal writes well is a fact: he has a gift for synthesis, incisiveness, command of language, and he engages the reader. Whether he reviews good albums is a relative matter, not "primary" for the purpose of user evaluation. There are those who have written reviews of excellent albums while collecting very low ratings, which proves how wrong your idea is. The real problem is the array of 1s given to those who seriously and well review a low-quality album.
