Scott Cooper Black Mass (L'ultimo gangster)

Saw it yesterday and didn’t particularly enjoy it. Paradoxically, the film's weakest point is precisely the main character, who is poorly written. Bulger seems to oscillate continuously between a (not very credible) neighborhood godfather, a worried father, a sadistic and violent man who, all things considered, enjoys getting his hands dirty, and a criminal genius who outsmarts the FBI for twenty years. He has no code, no distinctive trait. His rise is not effectively portrayed, to the point that we need a voiceover to explain the difference between the Bulger of the early scenes and the one at the end. Everything else, upon closer inspection, works better, especially Connolly’s character. Three balls because in the end, it didn't do a damn for me.

Always light proposals from you, huh?!? Just kidding. Another big page. Well done.

In the end, I saw it and I have to say I didn't like it. I don't want to come off as a snob at all costs, but I realized it was "Sundance material" within 6 minutes. My judgment is: what a drag. What a drag these crooked yet sincere and lasting friendships are, what a drag these quirky yet understanding parents are, what a drag this whole "weird but cute" vibe is (which has unfortunately taken a nasty turn where "weird IS cute" or, worse, "cute IS weird"). My father told me to fuck off when I said I was enrolling in law school because he wanted me to become a lathe operator like him. The protagonist of this film, on the other hand, does nothing all day, but his parent (obviously a sociology professor) who seems to have watched The Big Lebowski a bit too many times (but, hey, he's not stupid: he's been showing Herzog to his son since he was 6!) is all happy because his only son spends his time making pathetic amateur films with his childhood buddy who seems half-autistic. And that, in itself, would be just fine. The surreal, the fable-like, work wonderfully. But no. Never once do these films have the courage to push the accelerator all the way down. They have to force in the "clockwork gut punch," the "cold splash of reality" thrown in through the window. This way, the film can also be appreciated by those "normal" people, those who don't necessarily listen to Codeine to lift their spirits or who don't work at an independent label or run a fanzine on Armenian nouvelle vague. The trick worked for the first 157 films of this type. Today, it’s just hedging, playing it safe.

I confess that until a few weeks ago I thought that vaporwave was a debaserian invention, like Avant Minimalism Grindcore. But instead... I'll give it a try.

A report to lick goat feet and goat horns. Congratulations: you're an encyclopedia! Lately, I've been reading very little, and I must confess that horror stopped being one of my favorite genres a while ago, but I don't hide the fact that it has piqued my curiosity quite a bit. Great job.

I stumbled upon your review currently on the home page. For me, it's an incredibly interesting discovery: guilty as charged, I don’t know this band, but the way you talk about them makes it clear they are a key milestone for anyone who appreciates certain sounds. Thank you!!

It's a strange review. It almost seems like a copy/paste of different snippets from various reviews. So much so that some concepts are repeated multiple times. In any case, it's not written very well, but the proposal seems vaguely interesting. Among other things, I live in Cavaria and I went to the brewery with the guy from Gormiti one evening a few years ago (I'm friends with Simo and Fra, if you're reading). I think I'll give it a listen.

I feel like this review is either a 5 or a slap in the face. The score goes to "ask your god if he can multiply rhymes," which has that touch of satanism that makes me feel young again.
