I only have hazy memories, but it seems to me that even the mastiff Contra gave us quite a few satisfactions...

Come on, I can agree on Pirlo (far from Er Moviola...), but Ambrogio is doing really well: we basically started winning since he returned to work hard in midfield. As for Gourcuff, I read an excerpt from an interview with Maldini for a French newspaper where he said that the good Yoan (is that his name?) used to act like a real clown back in the day: he trained poorly, was a joker, didn't respect rules or schedules, refused to learn Italian, and in the end, the locker room didn't like him. However, people close to Milanello told me that he was sent away because he is omosex...

I'm taking a look at the website connected to the book (http://www.calciobidoni.it/index.html). Goodness, it feels like looking at a middle school photo album! By the way, I'm remembering some wonderful gems. One above all, the exchange between Taribo West and Marcello Lippi: "God told me that I must play for Inter," says West. Lippi replies, "Oh really? He didn't say anything to me" :D

Of course, given the years that have passed, the memories are quite hazy, yet I am almost sure I remember that Vampeta's arrival was greeted with great enthusiasm by Gazza, complete with big headlines in size 72 on the front page. In more recent times, on the red-and-black side, I would point out the excellent Oliveira: he didn't have a bad shot, but unfortunately he couldn't even see the goal of his own house and spent a good part of the match with his hands on his hips. The memory still evokes an onset of gastroesophageal reflux...

How wonderful! Christmas is coming and in the sleigh there's always the same dry reindeer shit: Vasco, Ligabue, Mariah Carey... there's even the posthumous album of unreleased tracks by Michael Jackson!

@Jurix: oh no! :D it was a nice little thing we started over email with Josi and I don't remember who else. Something like: "Before you sign up for Debaser, it's good that you know that sooner or later...". There were things like: 1) you'll want to review Octavarium by Dream Theater or The Dark Side Of The Moon; 2) you'll want to create a fake account to get back at your best friend who rated one of your reviews a 4; 3) a protonuragic being called sfasciacarrozze will comment on one of your reviews and you won’t understand anything of what they wrote… etc etc.

"What’s the point of continuing to make studio albums just because they have to?" Because it’s their job. I know it’s hard to connect the word "job" to people who, at 50, are still singing "No apparent motive just kill and kill again," but that’s how it is. Slayer employ (and make money for) a lot of people; they have contracts to fulfill, managers to feed, and then there are the magazines, fan clubs, etc. They can’t just decide to stop and go fishing on a Sunday morning by the Ticino River. People demand it, and the business demands it. Also, I don’t want to believe that after 30 years they haven’t gotten fed up with playing the same stuff. Moreover, your reasoning starts from a wrong assumption: that the current Slayer represents "mediocrity." That’s not the case. Live, they still tear your ass to shreds; they haven’t lost an ounce of attitude or impact. Okay, Araya can’t hold up throughout an entire concert anymore, but, come on, he’s 50 years old! It’s fine that he sacrificed his foreskin to Satan, but if his throat can’t hold up anymore, there isn’t much you can do about it. You didn’t like this album? Well, you have to agree that the two previous albums were at least more than decent. And, I repeat, considering they’ve been forced to keep playing the same tune for 30 years, I’d say that’s a record. Now, I’ve been out of the metal scene for years, but – tell me – which other bands are capable of holding their own live and in the studio? A few years ago, I even heard someone mention Trivium... which says it all.

But then just imagine if at 30-something I still have to find myself talking about Slayer! Bah!

We’re talking about a band that for 30 years (damn, 30 years!) has hardly ever strayed from one genre (yes, okay, South Of Heaven is slower, God Hate Us All is more hardcore, but let’s not kid ourselves: it’s the same old soup) and yet continues to relentlessly churn out records that are more or less good, but always more than respectable, avoiding crap, embarrassing appearances on MTV (how nice it was to see Hetfield getting excited over the version of Fuel sung by Avril Lavigne!). And, above all, they continue to play extreme, aggressive, impactful music. So much so that the best stuff, in my opinion, still happens when they play 2-minute songs, with the tu-pa tu-pa cranked up to a thousand, chaotic solos, and Araya belting out blasphemies while tearing down crucifixes. When they try to change course, to vary their proposal a bit, they always seem a bit clumsy (see various interludes on the title track).

Well... I don't know. I'm more and more convinced that an album by Slayer (today) should be considered nothing more than a way to keep a band that "cannot afford to die" (quotation marks obligatory) alive. They themselves are now living monuments to their own career: they find themselves in the material impossibility of varying their musical proposal, having already dissected it in every possible and imaginable way, with an audience that continues - rightly so, given the absolute lack of worthy heirs - to idolize them and regard them as the flag bearers of a genre. It's a shame that this genre - let's face it - really doesn't have anything meaningful left to say. Moreover, the weight of the years is beginning to be felt. Frankly, your review seems excessively harsh and ungracious: criticisms about the sounds are valid (even though the reference to Hell Awaits doesn’t quite fit: different times, different story), but when it comes to the composition, it seems you've exaggerated.
