Explosions In The Sky Live @ Bologna, 29.05.11

I have a strong fear that my comment will ruin the "magic" of this page, and I truly regret it: to me, these guys have always said very little. Good, perhaps excellent craftsmen, but craftsmen nonetheless. Not to mention "banalizers of the Mogwai" (just to bring an innovative-constructive critique! :) ). The feeling is always that they are satisfied with a continuous unfolding of suspended and melancholic melodies, often cloying and/or sugary, that either evolve into a crescendo or alternate with rather predictable "fulls" and rarely anything truly harsh. There is no exploration of sounds, no particular attention to effects, the "fulls," the explosions promised by the band's name are, all in all, harmless (I don't recall ever finding a true "wall" of distortions in one of their albums, like you can hear in a track like Like Herod), and there are no really interesting intricacies/overlaps in the guitar lines. I believe this type of music has stopped "amazement" for some years now (and I think the most evident demonstration of this is the latest Mogwai, which – aside from some clichéd episodes – seems to reveal a desire to move away from certain post clichés, though whether the result excites me is another matter). However, I'm glad the concert gave you so many emotions... :)

Let's put it this way: if you were a child from Afghanistan who has never been able to study because of the war, having just arrived in Italy a few weeks ago, and someone has just gifted you a computer, I would say you did a great job. I listened to them on MySpace: not bad at all, but really - really - too derivative. There's not a single element in their proposal that allows them to be distinguished from the reference bands. They are pleasant, but they risk getting lost like pebbles in a mountain of gravel.

Some of my friends find them irresistible. For over a year now, practically every Saturday night I have to endure the little routine of two of them who start repeating "So?""So?""So?""So?""So?""So?""So?" "So?""So?""So?""So?""So?""So?""So?" "So?""So?""So?""So?""So?""So?""So?" "So?""So?""So?""So?""So?""So?""So?" "So?""So?" followed by uproarious laughter. Or: "oooooooooooooommmmoooooooooosessss sssssuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aalleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" followed by an uncontrollable laughter like one hasn't seen since the days of Martufello. One time I ran into the Non Giovane at a Dinosaur Jr concert who was trying way too hard. I think this is much funnier.

Why the laughing emoji? Do you think someone is joking? Do you think someone is tickling you?

@Nes: as far as I know, the Core haven’t done anything else, especially since the guitarist (Fryn, or something like that) ended up playing (or was actually one of the founding members, I don’t remember) for The Atomic Bitchwax, where he should still be playing now.

You remember very well, Geo. Of the triad from Orebro, the Witchcraft are the ones where the references to the SabbaBabba are most evident.

Oh my goodness, Space is a gem! It’s an entire summer evening lying on a hammock with beer and cigarettes after a long hard day at work. Cosmic peace, nothing else.

In fact, I was expecting an entrance with a pneumatic hammer from Caz any moment now. Probably soon enough, geenoo would also chime in, and at that point, they would have to call the bomb squad. The big problem is that, at the moment, I really have nothing to respond with. I thought about it while having dinner, but nothing came to mind! :)

@panapp: I'm sorry we don't agree on The Incredibles and Rat, but I completely subscribe to your views on The Iron Giant. There's a strong handcrafted feel, but the execution is truly remarkable. Additionally, there are moments of immense empathy. Really beautiful. It reminds me a bit of certain works by Don Bluth: somewhat naive, rarely true masterpieces, but always enjoyable and "genuine."
