I read an interview in which Michael Stipe stated that if Up had been made by three unknowns instead of R.E.M., the audience would have reacted in a much more engaged and positive way. In a sense, that's true, because this album has many interesting and unusual elements in the career of R.E.M. (I think of tracks like "Suspicion," "At My Most Beautiful," and "Airport Man"). I don't think it's a masterpiece, especially since there are tracks that I find quite boring ("Falls to Climb," "Parakeet," "You're in the Air"), but among the recent R.E.M. albums, it seems to me that it's the one where they've tried to do something different. Around the Sun and Reveal already feel like clichés to me.

Ah, here in Belgium, the Millionaire album will be released on June 27th.
