Ladies and gentlemen, we are faced with an album that is already a milestone! Released in 2003 (not even two years ago), the album in question is the finest by Phil Evrum aka Microphones, an impressive concept album on the theme of "climbing"... the climb that in the album corresponds immediately to the ascent of Mount Eerie, but which, beyond the metaphor, on a higher level of meaning, corresponds especially to the inner climb, the one within each of us, and which refers especially to the grandest elements of the cosmos and nature: the sun (birth), the solar system (growth), and the universe (maturation).

The album opens with the incredible track "Sun"; 17 minutes of pure avant-rock madness, where the extremely dirty electronic blasts, as majestic as they are menacing, contrast with a sort of completely rickety blues-style ballad, creating a contrast that is not at all annoying but rather pleasing to listen to.
The next track, "Solar System" changes tune: here Phil Evrum's voice takes the lead: the melody is ecstatic and enchanting, but one should not be fooled: the dark and gloomy tones are always there, lurking, providing a backdrop, as in "Universe", where the predominant effect is that of repetitiveness, generated by incessant percussion.

The climb up the mountain occurs thanks to the title track, a true highlight of the work, which with syncopations, pauses, and chromatic contrasts, manages to really create that effect of a laborious "climb," full of asperities that make the journey difficult; it is the metaphor of the difficulty each of us faces in finding our way in today's society, with its contradictions and problems. Magnificent.
Thus, we come to the last "Universe" (the namesake of the third track), with which, through an almost progressive theme, made of winds and various noises, a splendid album closes, a masterpiece of the so-called "new rock", certainly an album to be remembered in the decades to come.
