Because it’s not really his fault. It costs too much. A record, or a painting, or a book, you can make them yourself for zero cost, pouring in whatever you want and letting your creativity flow. Even in two days if you want. A film, on the other hand, requires a lot of people, a lot of money among producers, actors, and all the hassle, you have idle time, and a ton of time. Too much time, too many people weighing in, too much money, and too much risk of flopping after wasting time and money, and burning bridges with the people who trusted you. A film, even the most independent on the planet, always has something commercial about it, that’s obvious and completely normal. A record doesn’t. So, cinema – whether it wants to or not – is a lesser art. Besides, the fact that every day there are two films released while at least 300 records come out is clear: in the chaos, you’ll find thousands of great records, but if there are only two hundred films, you’re lucky if you find a good one.
