I don't like super happy melodic Rap; it makes me think of blinged-out idiots. Way better stuff comes from the projects. Anyway, Pharrell, even if I can't stand how he sings, isn't an idiot; he's one of the greatest producers of all time. Even though he's been out there for just two years, he's been behind the scenes since '97 and has produced beats for a myriad of people.
