Leonard Cohen Dear Heather

I completely agree with Hal and Zigghio. I don't know a single Cohen fan (of any age) who isn't (some mildly, some heavily) disappointed with this album. However... your review makes me think. Who knows if listening to it again at the right moment, just by chance, in 'that' right moment, who knows... it wouldn't be the first time someone falls in love with an album long after initially getting it.

Never heard them, but if you say they're not far from Howe Gelb, I'll check them out right away... and damn, arrangements like Pavement and "touching scruffiness" like Mark E. Smith. All of this really piques my interest. Also, I'm not sure, does Tom Verlaine play on it too? I need to listen to them... I must.

Mhmmm I wasn't talking about the lyrics, but about the music, since I've only heard it a couple of times back then but never delved into it, let alone the lyrics. Hedonism (purely musical) is a gut feeling, at first glance. Ultimately, I prefer Weller's more soul-rock style than jazzy... Thanks Socrates for the interesting information, I didn't know anything about RedWave... an extra point for Weller :)

Very nice review, it was a pleasure to read you! :) I've seen this cover around (and who can forget it?), but I've never listened to it. I'm a bit curious now. Have you heard Psycho?

I've always liked Paul Weller, both with the Jam and as a solo artist. However, I never really approached The Style Council that much, partly because of that hedonism you mention... but the experience served Weller well: it helped him create that masterpiece (in my opinion) that is 'Wild Wood', which is musically unrelated to The Style Council, but in a certain sense, in terms of sound, it is connected. I have a weakness for Paul Weller. Heavy Soul is a great album too... In England, all the Brit-pop artists, from Oasis downwards, should bow to him, no doubt about it!
Bruce Springsteen The Ghost Of Tom Joad

Exceptional review. You’ve made me want to read Steinbeck and listen to this album more attentively. Springsteen is a strong and 'present' character. I don’t care if he’s mainstream, if he makes a rock that purists consider 'crass', he is and remains an emblematic figure of a 'certain' America, the one that works, that 'toils', that 'sweats for a living'. A consistent artist. Like Neil Young, for example - I’m always impressed by those people in America who live in trailers, the hobos in short. They have a tough life, they lead sad, limited existences, with no way out. There are children growing up in trailers parked at gas stations. There’s crime, violence, alcohol and drugs, prostitution. The hobos with their mobile homes are the favelas of the United States. That person who tortured Iraqis in the Abu Ghraib prison came from a very similar background. Or take Eminem, another one who comes from a similar situation... to give you a 'negative' and a 'positive' example. Yes, I will listen to this album more attentively, thanks to you Grass and the commentators...
