I was sarcastic, pret... I read so much about it, they talked about it so much, that it’s just... like that other movie, the night before exams. And then, I don’t know, Accorsi always makes me want to give him a couple of slaps...

Italian-style Harakiri. A masterpiece. Tognazzi, Mastroianni how we miss them. Noiret is starting to be missed too. We’re left only with Piccoli (who we can see today in Belle Toujours, a great one). An era has irreparably ended.

(those reposts of comments are such a drag). It’s hard to rate movie reviews, there are too many feelings and personal opinions at play; it’s a much broader territory, I don’t think I’ll ever vote on them.

-- Brando was a second choice; Bertolucci had meant that role for Trintignant, who refused because he found it too risqué. I can’t say if it was a happy choice, but I like to think that with Trintignant there would have been a certain elegance that Brando, who was charming precisely because he was "heavy," never had. -- Certainly, seeing it today doesn't have the same impact as seeing it in the 70s; back then, nobody talked about sodomy (let's get to the point) and sadism (soft) so "carefreely," except in underground circles. Still, for me, this film lacks a scene that would have made it perfect: a full-frontal nude of Brando. An image that would have made women happy. Sodomy yes (albeit subtly), but no cock. If there's a taboo in popular cinema even today, aside from a few rare exceptions (and apart from porn, of course), it's the much-declared penis. It's always there but never seen.
