Honestly, it's their album that I prefer the least, too... Rock for my tastes :-) For me, their undisputed masterpieces remain "Ege Bamyasi" and "Future Days," with "Tago Mago" and "Soon Over Babaluma" a step below.

His absolute masterpiece, which deserves a few more words ;-)

Well, the English Breakbeat was very popular in the early '90s QZ, especially. Just listen to the early productions of 4 Hero, the same Prodigy from "Experience," and the entire rave scene from 14-15 years ago. I believe that its natural evolution, more than Big Beat (a term I've never liked), was Drum'n'Bass, which strongly took the rhythmic fragmentation of the aforementioned genre and brought it to another level. In any case, "Battuta Grassa" is an absolute cult :-))

Alex Gifford also produced "V.I.P" in 2000, the most experimental album by the Jungle Brothers. It's a shame they disappeared within two years or so :(

Sanjuro, what you seem to be doing is frankly reasoning with blinders on, as if everything that plays on video and radio must necessarily be considered pure garbage. Furthermore, your way of responding, in my opinion offensive and unnecessarily over-the-top, makes me think that the only one throwing arrogant jabs as an all-knowing prophet is you... That "The Massacre" or "Get Rich Or Die Trying" are merely commercial products is well known (frankly, one cannot expect anything different from a character like 50 Cent), but that doesn't mean that a "Pop" product made for the masses can't be well made and executed. I don't mind the sounds of "Get Rich Or Die Trying" and the first G-Unit album at all (and I say this as a regular listener of quite different genres), with nice beats and engaging sounds accompanied by lyrics of undoubtedly questionable value, but supported by great grooves and rhythms. If you are looking for squeaky guitars and piercing screams in music, that's another story...

The album should be dated 1997 or 1998 anyway... Nani, corregete!

Aeneas the meticulous! :D I definitely prefer their Industrial-rhythmic component, though; if they had distilled the somewhat lengthy Ambient-Noise-Drone experimentalism of the third and fourth albums, they would have truly produced a masterpiece. In any case, if you haven't already, try listening to their early works released under the name Panasonic, especially "Kulma" ;-)
Skye Mind How You Go

I don't mind the single, but I don't think Skye will be able to match the brilliance of "Big Calm" and "Charango" on her own. Good review, in any case :-)

Well done Mauri, congratulations on digging up my ideal middle school soundtrack :-) A truly powerful album, less original than one might think, but still effective today. "History Repeating" with miss Shirley Bassey and "Bang On!" are absolutely awesome!

As a veteran Rap fan (I've been listening to this stuff for 10 years), I can't help but step away from previous discussions, which I find filled with clichés and ignorance of the subject matter. Rap is not just 50 Cent, just as it's not only the Beastie Boys or Public Enemy; it feels almost like reading the opinions of music critics from the '60s who labeled Hendrix and the like as subversive producers of unlistenable music. Let's hope that one day we can see the light... Regarding the album in question, I give a judgment very similar to that of the first album (which I still prefer): nice beats and an MC who I believe is almost unpresentable on the mic.
