THE REVIEW

Morcheeba without Skye Edwards = Nothingness, emptiness, nullity…
Skye Edwards = surprise and passion

The solo debut of the English singer, “Mind How You Go”, is primarily an interesting debut, because it shows us a singer who for years sang other people's songs... specifically those of the Godfrey brothers, and who now, after being simply replaced without any concern, reveals her writing abilities, and that genuine touch towards relaxing and introspective songs.

She does so with “Tell Me About Your Day”, a piece about a trip to New Orleans, where everything was recreational and regenerating, in which she managed, with producer-friend Pat Leonard, to bring out something of her own, with extraordinary simplicity and fluidity; she is surprisingly ironic in “What’s Wrong With Me”, where she nevertheless shows a veiled insecurity.
Skye crafts songs that are simple, some catchy, others merely fresh, but never clichéd, like “Calling”; or “Stop Complaining”; or the single “Love Show”; in other cases, she plays with herself and her music, as in “Jamaica’s Day”, where she reconnects with her origins, never truly lived, in an a cappella piece; without any instrumentation, just a light Gospel choir accompanying her in a piece of extreme beauty and evocative passion.

In other tracks, like “No Order” and “All The Promises”, Skye's voice appears more suffering, melancholic, and vibrant, and in “Say Amen” she instead creates a soul track, with those Morcheeba-like beats, and that piano-bar atmosphere (not as a pejorative) that makes you sway rhythmically to the music, in a track that grows note by note, and a voice that becomes increasingly languid and evocative.

In essence, Skye has managed to create a work without too many commercial pretensions; indeed, there isn't that standout track that makes you shout out a miracle, but rather a homogeneous collection of precious tracks, shaped by a beautiful voice, and as everyone says, capable without great extensions, of providing relaxation and atmosphere.
