Rating: "Kesto" is an album that makes life easier for you.
It simplifies it because you don't need to know anything else besides "Kesto" to judge it. And we young people like dynamic reviews, yes, yes, we like very easy mathematical calculations, incisive phrases, gut-level judgments.
Cd 1. Brute sampling and distortion à gogo, jagged rhythms, sound bombardments: electric more than electronic music. And you don't need to know that here Pan Sonic are mainly inspired by themselves, that the models are the centrifugal "Kulma" (signed "Panasonic") and "A" from some years before: the effect is distinctive and at the same time exhausting, so in the end, especially considering the happy ending of "Painovoima", the score is 6.5.
Cd 2. Electronic soft-noise. Sampling on soft and smoothed electric bases, noise applied to software. It's not necessary to know references like Autechre's "Incunabula" and "Amber": another ending, that of "Arktinen", throws a lifeline to a piece that doesn't add much to the musical plots of the previous one, the score is an encouraging 6.
Cd 3. Introspective ambient. It starts with a nice flush, and obviously jokes abound, light-heartedly. But continuing, in the end, those jokes we wanted to make, we might as well make them: laxative stuff here and there. No rhythm, no music, no plot. It doesn't make much sense to know that at least in the case of "Selittämätön" the reference to Schulze and Eno is due: nerve-wracking perpetuation of the absence of sound for one hour and a quarter, score 4.5.
Cd 4. The minimal continuum of "Säteily". Tangle of electric discharges without beginning, middle, and end. It's not useful to think back, besides Eno's space-ambient, to the electronic minimalism of Riley and Glass: unbearable, nothing more to add. Score 4.
Thus, by summing the scores obtained, we get an average score of 5.25, reasonably rounded down to 5. In terms of stars, wanting to restore to three the dignity of a passing grade, two will be more than enough: mediocre result.
