Great review for an amazing album. Waits has made so many great ones. If I have to mention just one, I say Swordfishtrombones because it’s crucial and marks a radical stylistic shift. You didn’t mention, it seems to me a key piece, both for this work and for Uncle Tom’s entire career: Innocent When You Dream. Quintessential wonder!

Oh, Devendra appreciated with the promising Rejoicin' in Heands. Then, as you tell it well, he became a bit of a ghost of himself. Perhaps overrated. A few listens here and there do not justify demands for depth. Fun and timely reception.

I haven't bought this album yet! Is it worth it, now that the initial impact has faded? I did get Head Carrier, though; it seemed more credible to me for the band's second life.
