I haven't seen Avatar, but I doubt it's objectively a bad movie, so the review seems unconvincing to me. That said, I have to take into account the subjective side of the matter: if I were to watch a combination of Dances with Wolves, The Last Samurai, Alien, and Terminator 2, I'm sure I would be bored to tears from start to finish (and it lasts almost 3 hours, just saying). So even those defending Avatar haven't convinced me. There you go.
