John Carpenter Fantasmi Da Marte

Oh no, March. This Carpenter film is simply beyond redemption. You’re right, it’s a mix of things already done by the good old John (the various Escape from, The Thing, Assault on Precinct 13...), but without the same charisma of the characters and the same directorial clarity. The action scenes are really predictable and poorly executed, Ice Cube acts worse than Martina Stella in this film and doesn’t have the charisma of Kurt Russell, not even a 1/10 of it. The plot feels like a déjà vu; the best part of the film is the guy who chops off a finger with a machete while opening the little can... there’s not much else. Insufferable, then, is the construction of the film, which starts with a main flashback and unravels into many sub-flashbacks corresponding to multiple points of view/characters. The idea was nice, but Carpenter overuses it, stripping away the little narrative tension he managed to create.
