Yes, they resemble each other quite a bit...but there are some really funny scenes (you know, the grotesque ones like Ammaniti)...with Bukowski, you're on safe ground...at least I hope :)

I got myself Mad...I liked it! I didn’t remember the story very well and I had removed some scenes...some really funny ones...the dialogue about the olive ascolane is phenomenal.

Thank you, Mad... I absolutely recommend drunken buddy stories (those are tales), otherwise go for pulp novels (you'll finish it in a couple of hours) and Hollywood, Hollywood.
