The Earth is subject to mysterious and inexplicable magnetic anomalies that should signal an imminent beginning of the process of geomagnetic pole reversal, which is the most traumatic and spectacular change of a planetary characteristic on a global scale that our planet undergoes.
The Earth's magnetic field is predominantly dipolar, meaning it resembles that produced by a magnet located at the center of the Earth, and it has indeed undergone spectacular polarity reversals. This phenomenon initially consists of a decrease in the intensity of the magnetic field and, in just a few millennia, causes the magnetic North Pole to become a South Pole and vice versa. If one could observe the phenomenon with a compass, one would see the needle rotating gradually from North to South. This phenomenon, which occurs over a span of a few thousand years, is called a reversal.
On average, a magnetic pole reversal occurs every 300,000 years. The last reversal took place about 780,000 years ago. In fact, the molten rocks erupted from volcanoes contain non-magnetized iron due to the temperatures, but as they cool, their ferrous component becomes magnetized, "recording" the magnetic field at that moment.
In their history, reversals do not have a defined periodicity and do not apparently show any regularity. Unfortunately, satisfactory explanations for this phenomenon are still not available, and the topic is one of the most complex in geophysics.
Scientists are therefore able to study paleomagnetism, tracing back to remote eras and revealing, in fact, the instability of magnetic poles.
The signals are all there; it has been a long time since the last planetary reversal, the magnetic North Pole is moving quickly, there is a magnetic "hole" known as the South Atlantic Anomaly, and the Earth's magnetic field is rapidly weakening.
