De André was a storyteller and a folk singer without any pretense of musical innovation or experimentation, as instead seen in Creuza de Ma. And he should be taken as such. He should be appreciated in his entirety, for his voice, for his ideas, for his melodies, and above all for his words. If a foreigner listens to De André, they certainly won’t be disgusted, but without knowing Italian, they will miss out on something magnificent. He was not overrated, simply loved for what he was. The best singer-songwriter and poet in Italy.
