In reality, the Bible is not the only mythological text that recounts the story of the flood. Take, for example, the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh or the Greek story of Deucalion and Pyrrha, indicating that in ancient times there was likely some kind of catastrophic flooding event. Not to the extent described in these epics, of course, but a historical basis, albeit "manipulated," is possible.
