Meanwhile, I quote the definition from Wikipedia: "Pulp is a literary/cinematic genre that features strong storylines full of violent crimes, atrocities, and macabre situations." The pulp genre was born in the early 1920s with serialized stories published in magazines (the so-called Pulp magazines) of 128 pages with dazzling covers but with the inner pages printed on untrimmed wood pulp paper (in English, pulp), hence of very poor quality.
"The story is more important than the paper," Frank Munsey, a former telegraph operator and inventor of the format, claimed.
It was in the 1930s that the genre reached its peak with the historic magazines Weird Tales and The Strand.
The novels, which in some cases began to feature recurring protagonists, were written by dozens of authors, some of whom are now considered masters of genre literature, such as Howard Phillips Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, and Robert Ervin Howard. Prices ranged from ten cents to a quarter of a dollar.
They contained adventurous, fantastic, and suspenseful stories, often with masked protagonists, but almost always featured sensual women depicted on the cover.
The literary style, since authors were paid by the word, was often redundant with adjectives and adverbs, giving rise to a sumptuous narration that became the trademark of the genre.
