Few, indeed, very few progressive albums have been able to match it... unique, a perfect fusion of progressive and jazz, creating 4 perfect suites!!! "Moon In June" deserves a monument dedicated to it...

There are no words to describe this work. I can't do it.

Masterpiece. For me, however, it's a progressive album tainted with jazz rather than a true fusion; the attitude is still that of a prog band. Moon in June is among the everlasting masterpieces of rock.
Sonic Youth: Daydream Nation
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
I still need to listen to the rest of Sonic Youth, but this remains an absurd, adrenaline-fueled, painful, and moving album, not at all commercial (something I seemingly thought)... a beautiful record that I could have discovered earlier...

It's the deluxe edition with "Within You Without You" by the Beatles in a version with a martial drumbeat and distortions? Beautiful.

Stefano Sollima: Gomorra - La Serie

A first season with high levels of suspense, a second season that is very psychological, full of twists. In summary, a TV series (Italian!) of the highest quality, among the best available.

Best live ever...
The Beatles: Abbey Road
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
It may not be innovative, but it remains a milestone. The masterpiece of the Beatles, who receive a recognition they truly deserve, despite their lack of creativity compared to others.
The second masterpiece of the Beatles, not their best. I don’t know what the hell goes through Rolling Stone’s mind to call it the greatest album of all time, but it remains a masterpiece nonetheless. "A Day In The Life" speaks for itself.

Second masterpiece in a row for the Doors. Memorable "People Are Strange" and otherworldly "Moonlight Drive."

The Doors, or rather, the best possible debut album
The Gun Club: The Fire Of Love

Space disco, seemingly raw like punk, but refined like nothing else. With that theatrical atmosphere, sometimes one must bow down...
  • fuggitivo

There is a finely managed bottleneck guitar, which makes the atmosphere of the album even more "mocking", if you will. Like the bitter ending of a thriller.
The Rolling Stones: Exile On Main Street
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
Despite continuing to prefer Sticky Fingers, I greatly appreciate the work done by the Rolling Stones in Exile On Main St., where they managed to create a blend of several different genres (rock and roll, country, soul, gospel), without falling into clichés that have been seen and revisited time and again.

It's a matter of taste. It's not the best album ever; there are infinitely better ones.
The Rolling Stones: Sticky Fingers

Although I also love "Exile On Main St.", I've always preferred the essential "Sticky Fingers," a compact, gritty, and sunny album at the same time. "Sticky Fingers" remains the best album by the Rolling Stones, in a period of grace.

How to Reinvent Rock - Part 2
Ingredients:
John Cale on his keys, the undisputed leader with the organ
Lou Reed and his distorted guitars
Maureen Tucker, a female drummer with the expressive power of a man
Here are the ingredients of one of the dirtiest, rawest, and most seminal albums ever. Mix them well, and you will have what may seemingly appear to be a sonic chaos.
A punk, new wave, rock and roll, raga rock, noise rock album from 1967. Simply history.
  • RinaldiACHTUNG

I dare a shot.. Among all the albums of '67, it's the best for me. Diverse, "new," strange, and cocky. And then there's Heroin.
  • tonysoprano

It's not a gamble, rather, even though my favorite from that year remains the debut of the Doors.
  • RinaldiACHTUNG
    2 aug 16
Yes, and even Sgt. Pepper agrees. '67 was a fantastic year (Hendrix), but in my opinion, this was truly unexpected. And then it makes you dream... When I bought it, I put it on one morning as soon as I woke up and it really felt like I was dreaming again. Indescribable.
The Who: Tommy
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
One of the greatest masterpieces of The Who and rock music as a whole. This rock opera excels both in the core idea of Tommy's story and musically, where Townshend reaches incredible heights. A thousand leagues above The Wall.

Sweet, delicate, romantic but, above all, a MASTERPIECE
Tom Waits: Rain Dogs

Perhaps more grotesque than "Swordfishtrombones," but we’re still talking about Tom Waits... this is an absolute masterpiece as well (right after his grand predecessor).
Tom Waits: Franks Wild Years

In 1990, together with theater director Robert Wilson and with the collaboration of none other than Burroughs, he created the show "Black Rider," in my opinion his best theatrical work (then in 1993, one of his best albums, definitely the most challenging). I'm telling you this because maybe on YouTube you can still find some clips of that show. Oh, it’s performed in German, but it's cool to hear the songs sung by the actors in their original context.
  • hjhhjij
    26 jul 16
I have never found any trace of this show, all written by Brennan, and Tommasone, nor of the other two with Wilson :(
  • tonysoprano
    26 jul 16
I knew that Tommasone was also a film/theater actor (even though I've never seen his movies)... he is something indefinable... my god, he is multifaceted...
  • hjhhjij
    26 jul 16
Movie actor, yes, let's say he's an excellent character actor. Theatrical, no, only a writer (especially and mainly of the songs in the shows, which then compose the story). He made his film debut in the late '70s in a Stallone movie. He's always balanced between small parts and more memorable roles. The first important role and perhaps the best performance is alongside friends John Lurie (another great musician, my dear) and Roberto Benigni in "Daunbailò" by Jim Jarmusch in 1986. The film is indeed enriched by Lurie's music and his "Jockey Full of Bourbon" during the opening titles. Other significant performances can be found in "Bram Stoker's Dracula" by Coppola (an excellent Renfield), in "America Oggi" by Altman (one of my favorite films), or even as the devil himself in Parnassus by Terry Gilliam. But there are others ;)

Incredible, but what can't Tommasone do?
Tom Waits: Swordfishtrombones
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
Initially, I was hesitant and traumatized by this grotesque atmosphere. Little by little, it turned out to be one of the greatest albums of all time, which made me discover the genius of Mr. Tom Waits.
Tom Waits: Blue Valentine
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
Moving, yet at the same time experimental, as if foretelling Swordfishtrombones. Majestic.
Tool: Lateralus

The feeling one gets from listening to this album is the same as when solving an algebraic problem. You have to analyze it thoroughly to understand its greatness. A mammoth album, scientifically perfect.
Townes Van Zandt: Our Mother the Mountain

Van der Graaf: The Quiet Zone / The Pleasure Dome

Great record, perhaps slightly better than the excellent World Record. The sounds become more "acoustic" and "accessible," yet still of high quality. I still wonder why I didn't discover the generator sooner...

Honestly, this is not a 5-star album, absolutely! It's a good album, but the comparison with the past and with Still Life is almost embarrassing. Unfortunately, it's the only album by the generator that I don't love, along with 'ALT' which I think is terrible instead XD.
  • tonysoprano
    30 aug 16
    Let's say it's a 5 rounded up. I'm generous with the grades.
  • tonysoprano
    30 aug 16
    It's a free 5.
  • tonysoprano
    30 aug 16
It corresponds to an 8 or 8.5 if there were some sort of scale, although here on Debaser I don't like to give numerical ratings.
  • hjhhjij
    30 aug 16
I have definitively eliminated ratings, even the stars. I would remove the ones I've already given if I didn't know that doing so would flood the homepage with albums I've de-collected years ago, which doesn't seem nice. However, in some ways this album is fresher and more unique than "World Record," and it has 4-5 remarkable tracks. Hammill sets up a new lineup, removing the Generator, and instead of Banton and Jackson, he brings back Nic Potter and adds an amazing violinist (check out String Driven Thing), further renewing the sound of his band which takes on a different shape. On its own, it wouldn't deserve the highest rating; it's inferior to the previous albums, but it has its merits, definitely. Then "Vital" will come along, a little gem not to be forgotten.
  • hjhhjij
    30 aug 16
"Alt" was yet another experiment, this time not going very well.
  • tonysoprano
    30 aug 16
In fact, I was saying that this is a free 5, since I don't like to take away. The 4 points are deserved by the debut, given that there are many ideas, not entirely managed properly.

A record that I appreciated a lot (even though it can't compare to the "sacred monsters") is Present. A great album.
  • hjhhjij
    30 aug 16
"Present" is a great album, a return (of the VDGG brand since Hammill hasn't stopped for a moment in the meantime) that is excellent. For me, it remains the best of the new era, which has always been on the decline until now.
  • hjhhjij

    "In" diving.

I’m missing the Trisector generator, A Grounding, and Alt. Let’s see…

three albums... and I've finished the entire discography of a band I've loved madly...
  • tonysoprano
    30 aug 16
Anyway, Hammill has probably made about sixty albums in his career, holy shit. But that man takes a moment to breathe XD
  • hjhhjij
    30 aug 16
No. He had a heart attack and shortly after came out with his best album of the 2000s, indeed the best since "And Close as This."
  • tonysoprano
    30 aug 16
    Incredible...what album is it?
  • tonysoprano
    30 aug 16
I just saw it, sat for more than 40 minutes... oh my god... anyway, up to Present, no VDGG album has seriously disappointed me.
  • SalvaDM
    30 aug 16
You've already said it all! I’d like to add that 'Patience' remains an incredible album and one of the best from VDGG, while I didn't enjoy 'Trisector' aside from the suite 'Over The Hill', in addition to 'ALT'. As for Hammill, I stopped at 'Out Of Water' from '90. After that, I only know 'Fireships', 'Incoherence', and 'Consequences'.
What other albums do you think I should listen to, @[hjhhjij]?
  • hjhhjij
    30 aug 16
Many of his best works from 1990 onwards you already know. You’re missing, absolutely, "Roaring Forties" and "The Fall of the House of Usher," an operatic experiment, no less, by Hammill, which for me is one of his most beautiful works from that decade. He also made a second edition in 1999; the original is from 1993.
  • SalvaDM
    30 aug 16
Thank you hj, as soon as I can, I will listen to them! The problem with Hammill is that he has made a million albums ahah
  • bluesboy94
    30 aug 16
The classic album full of good things, even though certain "peaks" are missing (which VDGG had accustomed us to since their debut). The elegiac "The Siren Song," the pyrotechnic baroque-rock of "Cat's Eye" (the best track on the album by a wide margin), and the intricate "The Sphinx in the Face" are three more remarkable episodes in PH's vast repertoire.
  • hjhhjij
    30 aug 16
"Cat's Eye" is a step above the rest, I agree.
Van der Graaf Generator: Vital
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
...but damn it. Even live! Monstrous in every way!
Van der Graaf Generator: Still Life
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
"Pilgrims" is illegal and painful, the title track and "La Rossa" two dark masterpieces, "My Room" an indispensable and sweet masterpiece... "Childlike Faith in Childhood's End" needs no description. Does this masterpiece deserve a 5? Perhaps even a 5 is too little...
Van Der Graaf Generator: Present
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
They are almost 60 years old. So what? In the meantime, in 2005, they released this monstrous album, after almost 30 years from that majestic live of "Vital." Hammill's vocals have not lost the aggression and energy of the past, David Jackson, Hugh Banton, and Guy Evans. The Van Der Graaf Generator are back, and no comeback could have been better!
Van Der Graaf Generator: Pawn Hearts
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
A journey in search of the solution against loneliness, able to move you in that damned poetic finale...
Many ideas, not yet managed to perfection. It’s still far from the masterpieces that will come in the future, but if a band debuts with a song like "Afterwards," they definitely deserve the 4 balloons without much doubt.
This album is more than enough for me to define Van Der Graaf Generator as the Kings of progressive rock. I honestly have no more words.

I love this album, and I place it on par with Pawn Hearts, even though I prefer it by millimeters, because it made me discover Van Der Graaf and because it has A Plague, which always moves me. Then, of course, it's understandable for someone to prefer the other because they have a practically identical level of high quality.

Area are a clear demonstration of what a pain categorization can be. Sure, they can fit into progressive (literally, more progressive than them...) but they are also avant-rock/Jazz-rock/fusion/free-ja zz/ethnic/avant-jazz/even "pop" at times/avant-garde and a bunch of other fancy words that mean nothing.
