Deep Purple: Made In Japan
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Incredible live performance, historic, one of the best and most charismatic ever. Technically flawless, it falls just short of perfection due to a slight "out of tune" moment from Ian Gillan in Highway Star, but those are just details.
Eiichiro oda: One Piece
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
A decent but not thrilling start (volumes from the first to the ninth), thrilling and unique from 10 to 65, has somewhat lost its way with the Caesar the Clown saga (ridiculous saga!), only to return to high levels thanks to the legendary Doflamingo... I stopped there because I got fed up, it’s too long... :(
  • COX
    26 jul 16
Is the Punk Hazard saga ridiculous? But there are epic moments like Zoro vs. Monet, Vergo vs. Law, and Doflamingo's arrival! The post Dressrosa arc deserves a lot instead. The Zou arc (which has been concluded for a while now) is one of the best in the entire work.
  • tonysoprano
    26 jul 16
The saga of Doflamingo is unique... the best is that of Marineford...
that of Punk Hazard makes me anxious, too predictable and not unexpected enough for the standards of OP.

I'm not saying it sucks, just that the absolute unpredictability of Marineford is lost.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Tarkus
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
What a shame, they could have really hit it big. The titular suite is ridiculous at times, and way too long. The second half, beautiful, makes it even more frustrating. A great opportunity wasted.
  • sergio60
    25 jan 17
every opinion is sacred but.....tarkus is more so....the suite is simply magnificent with no weak moments and it flows by all too quickly....the B side has the flavor of filler with the sole exception of only way featuring the Bach-like insert of the fugue, the rest would also be good (for the rest of the prog groups) but not by the standards of ELP at that moment....
A good debut for ELP, very inspired, although they suffer from slight prolixity in some long tracks (Take A Pebble) that could have lasted 2 or 3 minutes less, even if they are beautiful and powerful. Good first impression, as they say. But definitely not a masterpiece. Too immature.
  • hjhhjij
    4 sep 16
Well, you're obsessed with immaturity in the wrong records. These were very mature, all coming from significant experiences that had been made and finished ;) Probably the one about excessive prolixity is more focused and mature, but that's just my opinion.
  • tonysoprano
    4 sep 16
I find this one by Brain Salad Surgery more verbose.

  • hjhhjij

    Of tastes.
  • tonysoprano
    4 sep 16
I like them, but sometimes I don't understand where they want to go with it, so many poorly managed ideas at certain points, wordy and sometimes even boring. Tarkus becomes deadly dull after 5 minutes.
  • hjhhjij
    4 sep 16
And I prefer that of Karn Evil :D But I agree with the concept. It's not that they had poorly managed ideas, it's that they always focused too much on technical performance (where they were monsters) compared to composition (which I think Emerson has always been somewhat limited in). Just a bunch of show-offs. Except for Lake, bassist, singer, and when he felt like it, also a great songwriter. All the short songs of the band are his, and to me, they are the best things in their albums.
  • tonysoprano
    4 sep 16
Lake should not be touched, Palmer was a great drummer, the blame was on Emerson, there were ideas. Poorly managed.
  • sergio60
    25 jan 17
Well... defining E.L.P. as an immature work is absolutely incorrect. It has all the hallmarks of a masterpiece, with the significant addition of having opened a highway for all the upcoming bands (given that the Nice had only blazed the trail and that only Emerson had the courage to continue straight in that direction). Forty years later, it still sounds fresh, intriguing, and grandiose. Keep in mind that in the 70s, they had an immense following—far more than M. Jackson...
Emerson, Lake & Palmer: Brain Salad Surgery
File Audio I have it ★★★★★
The best album by Emerson, Lake And Palmer, technically analyzed in almost every detail, with that wonder of Karn Evil Nine which rightfully enters among the best suites of all time. It would be a record worthy of the title masterpiece, it’s a shame there’s a filler, namely "Benny The Bouncier" that disrupts the balance. They came very close to the title of masterpiece. A magnificent album.
Eric Dolphy: Out To Lunch

A disgustingly perfect album...complex, refined, and at the same time melodic...my god, the sax!
Fabrizio De André: Tutti Morimmo A Stento

One of the darkest albums I have ever listened to. The first "classic" Italian album I heard was love at first "sight" for this masterpiece.

One of those albums capable of completely transforming the history of rock and music as a whole... "Miss Fortune" feels like it's from another planet...

Great debut, excellent fusion of blues. A really nice "on the road" album:
Focus: Focus II

Album, eclectic and with a perfect blend of hard rock and a progressive sound reminiscent of Jethro Tull. A masterpiece! Holy smokes, what a suite "Eruption"!
  • hjhhjij
    2 aug 16
Surely the Tull were also much more folk. But if there’s one group between the two that was more heavily tilted toward hard-blues/blues-rock, it was Jethro. The Focus had this "classical" melodic ability that was quite evocative.
  • hjhhjij

Battisti doesn't drive me crazy and I know little about him, but I have no doubt that Anima Latina is a fundamental album. In any case, Italian singer-songwriter music is a world to be discovered; from Battiato to De Gregori to Fossati to Lolli and so on, there's truly something for everyone :)

Italy has gifted us with pearls of unparalleled songwriting. Italians, renowned for their exquisite taste, prefer foreign music... Heaven forbid listening to Italian music, what kind of impression would that give me?
  • tonysoprano
    4 jul 16
Italian singer-songwriters are amazing, but my favorites are foreign, just a matter of taste…
  • Zimmy
    4 jul 16
It would be pointless to belittle the Anglophones to praise the Italians or vice versa. It’s like asking: who’s better, Dylan or De André? Absurd. Of course, people like Dylan and Cohen are the foundation of everything that followed, even in Italy (without Dylan, De Gregori would never have existed, for instance), but in the end, that doesn’t mean much. So long live the Italians who are second to none, but also to the foreigners who have set the standard like no one else.

Genesis: Foxtrot
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
The best album by Genesis: between the solemnity of "Watcher Of The Skies", the captivating calm of "Time Table", the polyrhythm of "Get'em Out by Friday" with an astonishing vocal performance by Peter Gabriel (just listen to believe), the "charismatic" sweetness of "Can-Utility and the Coastliners", Mr. Steve Hackett gracing us common mortals with "Horizons", a breathtaking acoustic piece, and "Supper's Ready", their ultimate musical manifestation, 23 minutes that change the lives of those who listen. In just 50 minutes, Genesis produces their masterpiece and firmly establishes themselves among the greatest progressive bands of all time.

Genesis: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
"The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway," or the wonderful yet dramatic and convoluted adventure of Rael, who finds himself unwillingly in the "hell" of Broadway, among bleeding lambs, trapped in an ever-tightening cage, and other surreal situations that make his tortuous journey an experience that can often happen to those who struggle to face the world. A TRUE MASTERPIECE OF THE GENESIS DISCOGRAPHY, although I still prefer the magical "Foxtrot" by a hair, it’s more appropriate to consider this as a separate album in the Genesis discography due to its uniquely developed and particular concepts.
Gentle Giant: Gentle Giant

Monstrous even at their debut... gigantic band, even if the best is yet to come, heheheheh
Gentle Giant: Three Friends
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
A concept album about the friendship between three friends, who find themselves forced to part ways to pursue their dreams, only to reunite after a thousand adventures... From a musical standpoint, well, I think words are unnecessary to describe it: an absolute masterpiece once again for the Gentle Giant discography, exactly between "Acquiring The Taste" and "Octopus". Damn how much I love them.

By coincidence, it was my first encounter with the giant... and it was true love. I took the reverse journey, discovering many gems of the same kind, but... the glass house remains a must. The only one in a glass house contains more ideas than many LPs by other artists; or rather, anyone who had the mountain of insights present in that track instead of a song could have made an LP... and maybe even a double one. Paradoxically, precisely because of its (beautiful) complexity, it is not always indicated as a masterpiece.

No seriously. I’m telling you the truth, the album is beautiful (and has two or three wonderful gems) but out of the first 7 by Gentle Giant, it's the only one I have never (yet) been able to fully love, the only one that sometimes feels a bit self-indulgent in certain virtuosos and a little uninspired. Less engaging than the others. For me. It remains, however, a great album with a couple of masterpiece tracks inside, I mean.
