Some tracks are jazz-rock jams with a medieval flavor, while others are poems of great beauty. Branduardi's debut album is already a masterpiece.

Beautiful album, but still not a masterpiece for me; I greatly prefer the subsequent ones: you can still feel the strong influence of certain typical prog styles here, which in the works to come (starting from "La luna") it will surpass, developing a much more personal and original style. Ah, "Confessioni di un malandrino" is a true masterpiece, I completely agree!

True, I consider "Confessioni di un malandrino" one of the most beautiful by Angelo.
Angelo Branduardi: Alla Fiera Dell'Est
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Between absolute masterpieces ("The Tale of the Heron," "The Man and the Cloud," "The Funeral," but not only) and nonetheless enjoyable minor episodes, the delicate yet incredibly intense poetry of our work enchants and captivates, while the refined arrangements blending folk and jazz are a delight for the ear.

Beardfish: Mammoth
CD Audio I lack ★★★★★
An outstanding work. With Sjoblom on second guitar for most of the time and a piercing saxophonist, Beardfish creates a magnificent, restless, stunningly homogeneous, and never before so rock album. Truly no wrong move. "And the Stone Said" is one of the best progressive suites of the new century.
Sure, a bit cloying and naive as a start, but truly the day is seen from the morning!
Bill Bruford: Feels good to me

Great album, Bruford is as surprising and entertaining as always, and the guest musicians are exceptional. One could have dared a bit more, all things considered, given the jazz setting and past prog influences. Many tracks feel a bit too static.

It's an album that I've never fully appreciated. I've always preferred VOL 4. Thinking about it, there isn't a specific reason; perhaps what you say represents a good part of the criticisms of the album. In my opinion, it's because the first and the second are definitely nicer, and this one doesn't hold up in many ways. Not least in terms of the cover, which feels decidedly rushed.

Splendidly arranged pop disco, and of course Mr. Cross knows his stuff. It's a shame about the song structures, clichéd and sometimes boring.

Coldplay: Parachutes

Whether one appreciates the band's evolution over the years or not, this debut work is breathtaking: the arrangements are subtle, sweet, and refined, and Martin's vocals are magnetic and meaningful. Of course, the debts to other groups are many, but the feeling with which they approached this work is genuine and personal.

  • Tattone
    30 sep 15
The only flaw is that they didn't dare to go further in terms of composition, or maybe it was a choice to avoid burdening the album for a wider audience... the fact is many songs had too rigid and repetitive verse-chorus structures; the melodies were thrilling but after a while they lost some charm, one example being "My Father's Gun." True, "Where to Now St. Peter" is incredibly strong!
An absolutely negligible album except for "Finestre di Dolore."

Well... think that for me instead "Finestre di dolore" is the most negligible track on the album, I've never liked it that much. On the other hand, "Bene", "Informazioni di Vincent", "Cercando un altro Egitto", "A Lupo" are all songs that I love very much. Just to say that I don’t agree :)
  • Tattone

Okay, I accept but I don’t agree :) sometimes I wonder: if Francesco during that period (with his still very charming voice and that innocent air) had actually composed a random text and set it to music, how many fans would have considered it a masterpiece anyway?

    26 feb 18
I agree word for word. I love this album. I enjoy Mayhew's unrefined yet energetic drumming. I wouldn't underestimate Phillips' contribution to the composition either. If this album is different from the others, it's probably because it also bears his mark. For goodness' sake, Hackett's work on SEBTP and TLLDOB is out of this world; it would have been a real shame not to have been able to hear it. I just read about the song dedicated to Gabriel's future wife... could it be that he left for sentimental reasons? :)
  • hjhhjij
    26 feb 18
No, trust me, he left for totally different reasons (especially since a few years later Gabriel started writing and recording songs and demos in Ant's home studio) :-) Ah, Phillips' contribution here is central and fundamental; underestimating it would be rather foolish. This is "his" album in a sense.
Green Day: American Idiot
CD Audio Not intrested ★★★★
The album is truly a disaster in many ways, but it doesn't lack intense moments, and indeed, some that are genuinely moving. The credit goes solely to the songwriting and the frontman's performance. The singles are nice, along with a few other tracks, among which I highlight "Letterbomb" and "Give Me Novacaine."

Well, there are really a lot of things that don’t work (few ideas, few changes, pieces that are too long stuck together with tape) but in the end, it works! You're right about the songs that are really too long that I still can't remember after years, like Homecoming. I just listened to it again today when I went to the gym, and I have to say I enjoyed it; it was nice to hear it after so long. Flaws or not, it remains the best along with Dookie.
  • Tattone
    23 jan 16
I mean, it has its moments too, but amidst some truly embarrassing passages, the grand finale, like an end-section of a progressive suite, is unbelievably boring...and the album has its share of other disjointed episodes. But as you say, it remains one of their best.
Green Day: 21st Century Breakdown
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Still in a state of grace, Green Day deliver a monumental concept that, without renouncing their style, offers an endless series of songs that are sometimes more robust, sometimes more diverse, but almost always very successful, refusing to succumb to inertia and presenting intricate and dynamic tracks. Billie Joe's songwriting is consistently tense and dramatic, evoking great emotions at various moments.

I remember the single "21 Guns" (I admit, back in 2009 I was a bit immersed in the mainstream; I have my skeletons in the closet too). A classic disposable sappy song... Undoubtedly interesting alternative album, merging the rough intensity of metal, a fantastic funky bassist, and the personal interpretation of the singer Sandra Nasic. There aren't many truly good tracks, the highs often seem naive or lackluster, but the work is cohesive, the style recognizable with some good attempts to go beyond the song structure.

You rightly highlighted the commercial turn of the group. I would say that's where it all lies. Some musical winks to the past, but just to sweeten the pill for the old fans. At the time of its release, I found it disappointing and almost offensive to my ears, and to think that the video for Enter Sandman gave hope.... Today, with a clear mind, I recognize that it's a good album, but nothing compared to the previous ones. It nonetheless marks an epochal shift for the former thrash leading bands; from that point on, even Megadeth with Youthanasia would take the same path.

Truly an excellent rock album: powerful, fun, arrogant, frivolous. Especially noteworthy is the ever-appreciated guitar work of Mick, but also Vince Neil's glam styling, the songwriting of the good Nikki Sixx, and T-Bone's agility behind the drums. I've always preferred them to all the dozens of American glam groups like Ratt, Twisted Sister, and made-up sisters.... technical skills definitely above average... some good songs... but above all the cheeky attitude of seasoned hustlers that really broke through (to put it in the language of the youth) when, back in '87, their videos for Girls! A grandiose return to more rock sounds, without losing freshness or grandiosity. Not a masterpiece, but the band is still in great shape. The formula remains the same, but there is more room for others when it comes to songwriting; sometimes the tracks aren’t that great, but other times they definitely are (especially a discovery with Ament). Legendary songs like "Can't Keep," "Save You," "1/2 Full," and "All Or None" are still featured. It's true that nothing from Pearl Jam goes to waste.
