If it had been a single album of 12 songs... My personal opinion. "Siamese Dream" is the best. The only one of the pumpkins that I really liked from start to finish. Production included. On that album, I can even tolerate Uncle Tibi's squeaking.

ah ah ah! Alright, for me it's an absolute masterpiece just as it is, I was talking with @[Lao Tze] a few days ago, as far as I'm concerned there was nothing they could take away, it's perfect this way. As for Corgan's voice, well, there too, I find it perfect for his music; someone, in a documentary about them, described it as a moment of angelic voice, and the next moment as a banshee’s voice :)

Siamese Dream is an absolutely great album, but in my opinion, this one definitely surpasses it.
  • Psychopathia

@[madcat] well, at this point, make an effort and buy the deluxe edition with 5 CDs = 1 DVD. They’re not my favorite band, but I assure you that in the 3 extra CDs there’s a lot of good stuff, including an isolation by Joy Division!

My God, how badly I've written...
  • madcat
    29 nov 15
So, @[Psychopathia], would you recommend it to me? I have the double album bought years ago; how is the remastering? I'm intrigued by the fact that soon it will be releasing Machina and Machina II as a double album, just as it was originally conceived.
  • Psychopathia
    29 nov 15
for me the quintuple version is worth it. there are things that not only wouldn’t look out of place on the album, but in my opinion would have fit even better. now you know what to ask Santa Claus.
  • madcat
    29 nov 15
Ah ah ah! So there are quite a few unreleased tracks as well? (I mean new songs, not just covers, alternate versions, demos, and all that stuff :D)
  • madcat
    29 nov 15
Aesthetically, I think it's stunning; I was drawn to the quadruple vinyl version.
  • madcat
    29 nov 15
but obviously there are "only" the 28 songs from the double album there
  • Psychopathia
    29 nov 15
There are many songs, some covers and live tracks, as well as demos. But there are a lot of outtakes. Three CDs packed full. I won't comment on the sound because I don't understand it, but it sounds great. There's a book with lyrics and various ramblings, and a magnetic closure for the box. You can't fit everything on vinyl, and then you end up listening to it less because it's inconvenient. Go for the CD. The DVD, on the other hand, should contain a full concert, but I haven't seen it.

Sweet and violent at the same time, often in the same song.

The perfect soundtrack for the alienation of a guy completely wasted on whatever wandering through a future metropolis like Blade Runner.

I’m crazy, huh, but the sung part of Total Trash, that melody, somehow distorts reminds me of Wilco’s Summerteeth. Boooh...

On Elimination Jr., the break hits hard, but it doesn't matter; I still consider it part of Trilogy. Personally, that's "my favorite part." Of the whole album, I mean :)

Sonic Youth: Washing Machine
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
My favorite Sonic Youth album after Daydream Nation: a thrilling trip (in The Diamond Sea it feels like traveling through the depths of the ocean) and songwriting that reaches the levels of their masterpiece.
  • SilasLang
    6 feb 14
Well... of the sonic discography of the '90s, perhaps my favorite among favorites [alongside "Dirty" and the underrated "NYC Ghosts & Flowers"].
  • SilasLang
    6 feb 14
sorry, NYC is from 2000...but whatever, it's still an album that I believe is grossly underrated.
  • madcat
    6 feb 14
Well, the 2000s can still be considered part of the '90s, depending on when you start and end each decade :) you know that dirty has never really impressed me? Great attention to sound but they struggle a bit with songwriting compared to Daydream Nation, Evol, Washing Machine, Goo, but I should give it another listen.
  • hjhhjij
    6 feb 14
Well, for me the decade is counted as "2000-2009," it seems obvious to me, here you go: "2000-01-02-03-04-05-06-07-08-09" that's ten :D The album? Wonderful.
  • madcat
    6 feb 14
for example, in the "500" of Mucchio, the first years of the decades are 61, 71, 81, 91, so in this case 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000 are counted in the previous decade.
  • SilasLang
    6 feb 14
Well, whatever... Evol was something else, I really love Dirty. It might also be because I met them during the tour of that album, (many, to be honest, we got to know before the internet through Dirty, given the explosion of alternative rock in the early '90s..) so it's a sentimental thing, but damn I really like it!
  • madcat

oh yes, I think you’re right, there was something that didn’t add up, they played youth against fascism if I'm not mistaken
  • madcat

In fact, I remember that the sound captivated me, but the pieces themselves did not; you made me want to pick it up again.
Soundgarden: Superunknown
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
In a hypothetical top 5 of Seattle, this masterpiece should always be there.
  • Aquarius27
    3 dec 15
Yes, it would fit perfectly, but as I've said before, I prefer "Badmotorfinger"... My top 5? 5) "Ten," 4) "Badmotorfinger," 3) "Temple Of The Dog," 2) "Above," 1) "Dirt."
  • Aquarius27
    3 dec 15
In the end, it's always a matter of tastes :)
  • spiritello_s
    3 dec 15
I really enjoyed Superunknown... but I also think that Badmotorfinger is a notch above. Anyway, it's the perfect opportunity to listen to them again after a long time...
  • madcat
    3 dec 15
    let's see, I say (in no particular order) "Superunknown," "Vitalogy"; "Jar of flies/Sap"; "Nevermind"; "Congregation";
  • Aquarius27
    3 dec 15
Great choices Mad, I don't know only "Congregation," but if you even place it before albums like "Dirt," "Alice in Chains," "Ten," "In Utero," etc., it means it deserves it... I’ll have to give it a listen...
  • madcat
    3 dec 15
Thank you Aquarius! Yes, Congregation is a fantastic album! Highly recommended! However, regarding the others you mentioned, keep in mind that In Utero is one of my absolute favorite albums. I chose Nevermind because it feels like it fits better in a top 5 of Grunge. Ten, as I have often written, has some fabulous tracks, but as a whole it doesn't fully satisfy me, not like Vitalogy, at least. The electric albums by Alice in Chains are great, but I often find them overwhelmingly heavy for my taste. I prefer the "acoustic" Alice in Chains from the mentioned album and the wonderful Unplugged.
  • De...Marga...
    3 dec 15
I'll share my thoughts on Seattle (just randomly): "Ten," "Badmotorfinger," "Bleach," "Mudhoney," and "Above." "Superunknown" is a great album, but I prefer at least two other albums by Soundgarden.
  • Aquarius27
    3 dec 15
Well, on "Jar" Alice reach frightening heights, "Nutshell" is spine-chilling... The "Unplugged" takes your breath away, but I can only speak well of "Alice in Chains" since they are my favorite band from the Seattle scene, but also overall... I agree with the rest of what you said, less on "Ten" but we had already "discussed" that :D...
  • madcat
    3 dec 15
I have Superfuzz Bigmuff by Mudhoney, and since they didn't drive me crazy, I didn't dig deeper. Bleach is a great album, but as you know, the best by Nirvana will come later for me. Above is also beautiful, just like Badmotorfinger (not at the level of Superunknown though, in my opinion). A great but little-known album I want to mention is "Fast stories.. From Kid coma" by Truly.
  • madcat
    3 dec 15
I should retrieve "Louder than Love" by Soundgarden.
  • Alexander77
    3 dec 15
This should be in any top 5 of the last 30 years of music. Louder than Love is a great album but very "teenage" (they were very young). However, Loud Love is stunning.
  • ZannaB
    4 dec 15
Sorry for the unnecessary nitpicking, but Congregation grunge? Leaving aside the fact that for me grunge is not a music genre (but let's not start that, or we’ll never finish...) the Afghan Whigs have only the record label in common with grunge.
  • madcat
    4 dec 15
On whether to classify grunge as a musical genre or not, I agree. Congregation grunge? Yes, in my opinion, it fits in there; there's punk, there's hard, there are reminiscences of the '70s, there’s psychedelia, there’s the attitude, and obviously much more (starting with soul, for example). However, the elements to place it in the "Grunge" area are there. That said, categorizations are often extremely limiting compared to what a band produces, absolutely.
  • ZannaB
    4 dec 15
Yes Mad, I totally agree with the last sentence till death, it's just that in wigs I feel a huge prevalence of soul over other genres and they weren't from Seattle! Well, never mind, you're talking to someone who believes that the best band from the grunge stew is the howling trees...
  • Fantaman
    4 dec 15
Never understood what was so exceptional about this band and, in general, about a movement entirely based on recycling old things. They draw heavily from the seventies. Nothing new. For heaven's sake, it's a decent rock album, a fair listen all in all, but nothing compared to the Masters. The only Live Album by Grand Funk Railroad already has all the grunge you need to know.

Now wait. I hadn't read this:

    1) Fantaman: it was just an example of how even other very creative artists have at some point succumbed to market logic, even in a more blatant way. I could have put it as a postscript, but I don't think it's that important.

    Shortly after

    2) Fantaman: sorry, I spoke in the first person, but I was obviously referring to the reviewer. I just got a little carried away with him.

And this immediately came to mind: at second 28. The style of recovery is that.

But just leave me alone! You are clogging my email. I’ll explain for the umpteenth time, and let this be the last: I already explained that matter. It seems clear to me that anyone who thought I was chiccotana is just a poor naive. The reality is quite different; I have already admitted that I am not chiccotana and that I am not anyone's fake here. I have been following the site for a long time, as well as other webzines where I actively participate with widely appreciated content. The presence of chiccotana only motivated me to register here because he had a musical culture that you can’t even dream of, and I would have liked to interact with him. Unfortunately, due to your envy, you reserved an undignified treatment for chicco and, rightly so, he deemed it appropriate to step back and let you bask happily in your blissful ignorance. And I am especially referring to the user Hj, who for months pretended to appreciate stellameringa and her reviews, showering them with compliments, only to suddenly change his attitude as soon as he saw the tide was turning. Congratulations Hj, I see a bright future for you as a flip-flopping politician, because in the art of cowardly jumping on the winners' bandwagon, you are second to none. The same goes for Lao Tze, a user with commendable musical knowledge, but absolutely a disappointment from a human perspective. And with this, I’ll close. GOODBYE.

@[aleradio] and maybe you hadn't even read this: "Fantaman: Exactly Kloo, exactly. Try reading my reviews and tell me if they're written this way." And as everyone knows, Fantaman has written dozens and dozens of reviews, but especially the grand finale: Fantaman: I'm so sorry. Especially I apologize to stellameringa and chiccotana. In reality, I was just pretending to be them, just for pure fun. In short, it was just a game. I wouldn't want them to feel offended because it was simple horseplay.
I could never be them, and the proof lies in the fact that if I were them, once discovered, I wouldn't have continued using this nickname, it's obvious, I don't think there's a need to elaborate further. So, all right, it was fun, but as they say, the game is beautiful only while it lasts. Sorry again."

ah ah what a mess.... but thank goodness you and hijiji are here to keep things running during these lean months, and for that we will be eternally grateful while we wait for fantamen, a smile from vic, some far-right ultras or dotty points... by the way, where the hell is bartle when you need him.
Swans: The Seer
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
One of the most beautiful records I've listened to in the last 10 years: unforgettable atmospheres and pieces, sonic odysseys, between psychedelia, drone, noise, alternative, raga, experimentation, and unsuspected folk rock glimpses. As far as I'm concerned, their masterpiece.

So, did you hear the rest in the end?

I listened to To be kind, Children of god, White light from the mouth of infinity, and Soundracks for the blind. All excellent albums, but for me, at least for now, none reach the heights of The seer. Maybe I'll catch up on some others soon (love of life is on the list).

Well, in any case, your opinion is absolutely respectable even if I personally would choose another one if I had to pick my favorite (Soundtracks maybe). Have you already listened to all their best excluding the debut "Filth" (not sure how much you might like it though)? Anyway, "Love of Life" is another great album, in the vein of White Light. I'm really happy that you like the Swans mad :)

Actually, I'm avoiding Filth because of what I've read in various reviews out there; let's just say I don't think it's for me :) However, I might give it a listen, but I'll save it for last, if anything. The Seer really blew me away, though; when an album impresses me that much, it's hard for other albums in the band's discography to take its place. At most, I can find others that match it, but never surpass it.
