Alice In Chains: Dirt
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
Definitely dirty sounds, almost risking infection just by listening. A really filthy and sick record with an exclamation point! An excellent example of grunge.
Here's a live performance that gets me really excited. It's a shame that the two studio albums I've listened to don't come close to this work! The opener "Nutbush City Limits" is spectacular and alone is worth the purchase!

Ohh, I found one who likes old Bob! If you want some tips about it, feel free to ask, this live is beautiful, just like the following Nine Tonight from 1980 which I highly recommend. "Nutbush City Limits" is energetic and cranked up to the max (maybe on par with Ike & Tina Turner), but the real gem is "Turn the Page." Well done.
I don't know much about Clapton yet, but if his works are on average worth half of this, I think I'll have to get many of them. It's a touching album, it's so beautiful and played beautifully.

This is the pinnacle of Slowhand's career. From there on, there will be highs (few) and lows, a perfect album concentrated with gems of rock blues. Unattainable.

Recognizing the undeniable historical significance and instrumental importance of Mr. Clapton, I have never really managed to appreciate him much. However, this album is part of my extensive collection, and I find it a great work; correct me if I'm wrong, but it should contain that masterful song "Layla."

"if his works are usually worth half of this" The following ones no :) Those with Yardbirds, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, and Cream I would definitely say yes.

Great Blues Rock album, no doubt about it. Although in my opinion, Cream was on another level. As for the rest, Clapton’s solo work puts me to sleep.
Dinosaur Jr.: You're Living All Over Me
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
An album of devastating power, although not lacking in excellent melodies that blend well with the often "narcotic" vocals. In this album, Mascis's riffs and solos are spine-tingling for a work that is solid as granite, of superior quality and immune to repeated listens.
  • Goldfinger

Together with the subsequent "Bug," the best album of the little dinosaur.

Yes, there is no doubt. I must say that I place the debut more or less on the same level.

"immune to repeated listens." So true, I've been listening to it for months and I'm still not tired of it. Even though, when it comes to "Just Like Heaven," the version by The Cure is better.
Echo and The Bunnymen: Crocodiles
CD Audio I have it ★★★★★
I don't have the expertise to define this album properly: melodic post-punk, is that the genre?! Well, what I do know is that it's a show; I didn't know the band and now Crocodiles fits perfectly in my collection.

Eels: Beautiful Freak

Hypnotic, grey, melancholic, and dreamlike. To be handled with care if you're feeling a bit down, taking care in this case not to let it spin too much on a gloomy day, perhaps at the beginning of November.
Esther Phillips: From a Whisper to a Scream

This is soul! An album sung beautifully, arranged with class, and that makes you feel good every time you listen to it, strictly from start to finish.

To clarify, we would be somewhere around Aretha... jazz blues gospel soul country smooth easy listening funk and disco! Whatever this silky and sandpaper voice touched turned to gold.
Faith No More: The Real Thing

I don't love the genre, but this crossover is amazing. My favorite, and it's a real pleasure to listen to it again after some time to discover that it hasn't aged at all.

For me, this is the most poorly aged album by FNM. It's still a great record. But it was never my favorite of theirs. Quite the opposite of "Angel Dust" and "King For A Day," albums that I loved with all my heart. Just my personal opinion, eh...
  • tia
    17 apr 14
Surprise you're dead ..open your eyesssssssssss..! I believe that the FNM albums are aging well, just like good wine. Every time I listen to them, it's a nice burst of energy.. also makes me want to smash everything and move like a possessed person..!! The only one perhaps less successful and a bit subdued is the last one "Album of the year"...

What a great discussion I've found!!! As far as I’m concerned, this is my favorite album of the band with Mike Patton on vocals, even though the two mentioned by Silas are still two excellent heavy hitters; the version of "War Pigs," no need to mention the origin, elevates my listening experience.

I've always loved this album, even though I kick myself every time I think about how it could have been with better production. Stellar songs, but I've never been convinced by the sound impact.

I agree with TIA regarding "Album Of The Year"; it’s definitely their least beautiful album, although we can still find some gems there (above all, the lovely "Pristina").
  • Lao Tze
    17 apr 14
exceptional in terms of intrinsic value, regarding how well it has aged: you can tell it's a record from that era, you notice it. That doesn’t change the fact that it sounds excellent today, or at least that's what I think - too young to listen to certain stuff back in '89!
  • ilfreddo
    17 apr 14
When I say it hasn't aged at all, I certainly wasn't referring to the production, which is a bit lackluster and indeed doesn't do it justice. I meant that over a decade after the first time I listened to it, "The Real Thing" still plays in my stereo consistently and gets me hyped just like it did in the early 2000s.
A pleasant surprise with a mix of genres played as they should be and well-interpreted. Live, the tracks must be a blast.
Little tear!
Jeff Buckley: Grace

When a single album is enough... and more. Without wanting to make comparisons with the father, this is one of the most beautiful works of the '90s that I have had the pleasure of listening to, and not only for the famous rendition of "Hallelujah."

An album of intoxicating beauty, with songs almost whispered that mirrored much more direct pieces...a single grand work featuring a beautiful and intimate cover of "Hallelujah," just like the original...Only fate deprived us of the rest...and it's a shame.

At that time, (I believe it was 1996), I was not yet fifteen and they were the present-day equivalent of Messi for a Barcelona fan. Well, I remember that after the purchase I walked with my legs very wide apart for several days.

Motörhead: Inferno

Ten years later, it remains a magnificent, abrasive, no-frills sonic punch without fillers. I dusted it off with extreme pleasure. Inferno is sublime, considering that at the time, in 2004, they had almost 30 years of career behind them.

Patti Smith Group: Radio Ethiopia
CD Audio I have it ★★★★
I know that for most critics and others, the pinnacle of Patti Smith's career is considered to be Horses. However, I find Radio Ethiopia to be more focused and complete, a true delight from start to finish. I don't feel like giving it the highest score, but these stars, four, are full and definitely hefty. They fit snugly, quite uncomfortably, as if it were a Ryan Air seat for an adult of robust dimensions.

There are certain things about Ric and Ben that I adore, and others I like less. My favorite would be between Panorama and Shake It Up (maybe the latter, which you might not like since you’re just starting out and it's quite more electronic than the earlier ones). I even played and sang the title track of this one back in high school, along with Just What I Needed by the first Cars. However, my favorite is Dangerous Type; I don’t know if you have the LP but I recommend it because the drum toms sound monstrous at high volume on vinyl.

The Waterboys: Fisherman's Blues

The peak of the Waterboys with an immensely captivating folk rock sound featuring ballads like "A bang on the ear" and the sublime melody of the title track with a remarkable drive.
