Mmmh... John Coltrane? Miles Davis again, you said... Art Pepper? Frank Morgan? The Marsalis?

Because, of course, I didn't even want to mention Keith Jarrett, but I'm curious to know what place you would give him... ;-)

I'm not interested in Pepper, or the Marsalis either, but I do like Coltrane and Morgan; however, I preferred to include other preferences. Jarrett was credible years ago, but now he just falls flat.

I'm not a great expert in the subject. I wanted to know what you think about those guys, since you certainly know more than I do. Ah, allow me another question: Max Roach?

Bosch, your observation about the lack of some big names is justified; you are right. However, I could write another 10 lists and each would have different names because, in the end, it's the top three spots that truly matter. Rankings are created more for those who read them than for those who write them, perhaps to discover some lesser-known musicians rather than to find the big name that's missing. In a list of 15, it's impossible to include them all, and in one of 100, having such a precise idea is also difficult. Essentially: What the hell am I writing?

I understand what you're saying. However, you know, if someone reads a ranking and doesn't find Jarrett, they might start to have some questions. The fact that he has become less credible lately doesn't change the fact that overall he has been one of the best ever. In my opinion, I don't know about yours. Anyway, you still haven't answered me about Roach.

Great Andrew Hill, and great is his vibraphonic Bobby Hutcherson too! :)

Roach was Parker's drummer, and I can only speak well of him! Apart from being a great drummer, his projects have always been top-notch since the days of the great hard bop quintet with Brown, and he was one of the first to give a new rhythmic impulse to jazz, take it in 3/4 time.

I've always appreciated Jarrett's jazzy verve; his early standards are top-notch. The interplay is intense and genuine; it cuts through everything. His hybrid works, which are neither here nor there and distinctly Jarrett but often feel too much like craftsmanship, I can't stand.

Bobby was part of the legendary crew of modernism at Blue Note, an insane period with incredible records that made a tabula rasa. The styles and experiences of jazz were fused with extrajazzistic sounds at the edges of the avant-garde, and with great clarity.

Yes, the Blue Note catalog of the '60s is fabulous: Andrew Hill, Jackie McLean, Hutcherson, Hancock, Shorter, Gordon, Rivers, Hubbard and so on... all great music.
