In my opinion, the ranking of the top 10 was as follows:

    1) Freddie Mercury
    2) Ian Gillan
    3) Robert Plant
    4) Ronnie Van Zant
    5) John Lennon
    6) Greg Lake
    7) Steven Tyler
    8) Bruce Dickinson
    9) Janis Joplin
    10) Bob Dylan

Well, Ronnie Van Zant should be added; instead, Bob Dylan and John Lennon, as singers, I wouldn’t rank them that high. ;)
    I admit I don’t know much about Greg Lake…

Well, indeed, aside from his early work with King Crimson, I haven't really followed him properly, so I’ll take the advice and add Emerson Lake & Palmer to my next listens... ;)

The ranking is good, although I think there are a few too many Axl Rose, Bon Scott, and Steve Tyler. :) Since I'm listening to Van Der Graaf Generator right now, I can't help but point out the absence of the necromancer god of the throat, more commonly known as Peter Hammill. If you don't know the band, you should listen to something of theirs; you might not like it (it's pretty challenging), but you'll definitely recognize the greatness of that voice.

Stratos VI is a blasphemy; Italian music has had one of the most interesting voices of all time, not only when it comes to Rock, but also to Fusion, Avant-Prog, Avant-Jazz, and above all experimentation. In short, among the best ever.

@hjhhjij Haha, I miss Van Der Graaf, but since I trust your tastes unconditionally, I won't miss the chance to listen to them; in fact, they'll be the first I revisit as soon as I finish with the early '70s hard-rock revival. ;) You can also recommend me some specific albums to start with.

As for your hesitations about the rankings, I’d say the most agreeable one is the one about Axl, which I put on more out of affection than anything else... as for Bon Scott, what can I say, I love his boozy voice! :D As for Steven Tyler, I consider him the best as a singer (not as an artist).

It’s unquestionable that Demetrio is technically superior to all the names mentioned... However, while I consider him unmatchable for his ability to use his voice as a true instrument, I admit that in the interpretation of certain types of songs he wouldn’t, imho, have the incisiveness of the top 4 singers in the ranking... I mean, would you ever see him singing a piece like The Millionaire Waltz or The Immigrant Song? :D

I agree with Stone, I really don't like Stratos' singing style. That he has a stratos...pheric voice and knows how to modulate it incredibly is indisputable. However, personally, I look for something else in a voice: emotion. The rest is all added value.

I didn't know this song and at first impression, no, it doesn't particularly move me. I have the discography of Area and my judgment is still based on what I’ve heard.

Anyway, the point is not to see Stratos sing Immigrant Song, the point is to see Plant interpret or write Evaporazione or scum.

Anyway, even the "fellow countryman" of Stratos Demis Roussos needs to be mentioned. As Pop/Prog, Aphrodite's Child were fucking geniuses.

Well, Felo, but I don't know this fellow countryman of Stratos! :)

Listen to 666, it's an album that has rightfully earned its place in my top 50.

Stone, by Van der Graaf, listen to the historical trilogy, The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other (1970), H to He, Who Am the Only One (1970), and Pawn Hearts (1971), the latter being a milestone of prog and of all rock music in general. But be careful, theirs is a more "dark" prog, more "gothic," more celebratory and with fewer frills compared to that of Yes and Genesis. Also, take a look at the lyrics, written by Hammill himself, who also composes almost all the tracks, plays the piano (not the keyboards), and occasionally the guitar. If you appreciate them, then dive into the debut Aerosol Grey Machine from '69, Godbluff from '75, and the wonderful Still Life from '76. Enjoy listening!

Ranking issue. Bon Scott and Tyler may be good, but it’s just the genre that doesn’t sit right with me, a bit like how you and fedezan aren’t particularly moved by Stratos’s voice (but you both rightly acknowledge his great artistic value). Anyway, Demetrio could never have sung Immigrant Song, just as Plant could never sing and write Scum, simply because they represent completely different musical attitudes, two ideas of (great) music that are too dissimilar. Nice ranking, I agree Stratos should be higher too, but I understand and respect your opinion and I’m fine with an honorable 6th place.

Regarding VDGG, I absolutely agree with hj's suggestions. My favorite of the three is "The least we can do is wave to each other." Aphrodite's Child is Vangelis' band, and the album recommended by Felo, "666," is very beautiful.

Finally, someone who agrees with Fedezan on Byron! I'm going to correct mine too. I had forgotten about it.

  • fedezan76

Oh yes, I didn't want to emphasize it, but for me Byron is undoubtedly one of the most complete.

@hjhhjij just to clarify: I adore Area, therefore, I adore Demetrio, and I consider him number 1 for how he knows how to "play" his voice... but as a singer in the strict sense, I get more excited by the other four. ;)

  • hjhhjij
    21 nov 10
Yes, yes, I understood that you really like Stratos, he's still in fifth place, and those four there don't joke around, so it's all good. Stone, let me know what you think about Van der Graaf generator, then :)

ps.: I removed Stratos because he deserves a separate ranking! ;)

  • stonecoldcrazy
    8 jan 11
Well, compared to the other two, Pawn Hearts, aside from its more "progressive" setup, struck me with Hammill's vocal performance, which seemed even superior to the previous ones. Then... it's VDGG, superior music! ;)

  • hjhhjij

Great Stone! I agree with you on Hammill's interpretation, which here reaches its absolute peak, blending madness, theater, and drama, proving that he has learned the lesson from Tim Buckley well and delivering one of the greatest and most intense vocal performances ever, in all three pieces. I'm glad you enjoyed Pawn so much, and I'm pleased that you liked Van der Graaf in general. Fantastic!

Well, now all I have to do is listen to the rest, because they are truly monstrous! I really have to thank you for introducing them to me with your contagious passion, it was definitely worth it! ;)

  • hjhhjij
    8 jan 11
No problem :), it's always nice to see that thanks to your advice others are getting into similar groups; you have once again shown that you have quite an ear for music anyway ;). I'm glad I infected you :D
Now move on to the second trilogy: Godbluff (musically a bit poorer and angrier), Still Life, huge, and World Record, perhaps the most "commercial" but beautiful.

Well, since this Stone needs to be cooked to perfection, save the live "Vital" for last, one of the rawest and most visceral live albums I’ve ever heard. In some ways, it sounds almost punk (it may sound heretical, but Hammill "riffs" on the guitar in a wild, dry, scratching way as if he wants to pull out what he can't give). Here you can truly feel the necromancer Hammill unleash from his throat a rage that seems almost iconoclastic, pure fury, like a prophet of the apocalypse. It's shocking, considering it's Van Der Graaf!!! __
