Janis Lyn Joplin (January 19, 1943 – October 4, 1970) was an American rock and blues singer, noted for her powerful, anguished vocals. She rose to fame as lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company and in a short career became a defining voice of late-1960s blues-rock. She died in 1970 from a drug overdose.

Pearl was released posthumously in early 1971 and was produced by Paul Rothchild. Joplin is widely recognized for emotive, blues-inflected performances and recordings with Big Brother and the Holding Company and as a solo artist.
