THE REVIEW

Necessary preamble; there are already several reviews of Zucchero's highly anticipated new album, but I couldn't refrain from reviewing a record by one of my absolute favorite artists.

11 songs that partly remind us of the wonderful 'Spirito Divino'. The most appreciated Italian bluesman returns with an album “Fly” (“How can we fly with the eagles if we're surrounded by turkeys”). “Fly” is not a masterpiece, but in my opinion, it is still a marvelous album. It starts with “Bacco Perbacco,” a fabulous hit that makes you jump and dance. Every single rhyme, verse, and chord is an anthem to joy. Magnificent! Another dancing track is “Un kilo,” followed by the wonderful “Occhi”. “Quanti anni ho” also maintains the level. Track number 5, “Cubre libre,” lowers the quality as it is quite simply bad, but never mind, our Sugar bounces back with “E’ delicato” written with Ivano Fossati.

A gem is “Let it shine,” dedicated to the tragedy of New Orleans. The duet with Jovanotti is rather poor, but overall it’s an album that sounds good, Zucchero's voice is always unmistakable and the organ touches the heart. A record full of love is the most appropriate definition for this work with a pinch of Zucchero's typical glee and irony. In short, it would deserve a 5 according to deBaser ratings, but the chorus of “Cuba Libre” (I like lasagna, I like you) inevitably makes me lower the judgment. A bit of lightheartedness is fine, but only up to a point. Despite everything, truly a respectable album!

That’s blues!

“Fly has the sweet taste of maturity, perhaps finally reached.”

“The album globally struggles to find its identity, suspended between the glories of the past and the normality of the present.”

Fly is indeed pure poetry, a continuous 'soaring above the clouds,' with the absolute value of love and faith as the true leading theme of the album.

Zucchero rediscovers his true Italian roots in songs filled with previously veiled feelings, now revealed in a harmonic framework typical of European musical tradition.

"Zucchero is objectively a composer of music and lyrics, with a world-level talent and competence in the field."

"Mixing 'high and low,' good taste, and bad taste... manages to sound like the possible closure of a cycle, like a 'work in progress.'"
