We are in 1978, Vasco Rossi, an Emilian DJ, as well as a former teacher of technical applications with experiences as a director and actor in experimental theater, makes his debut with the album "Ma cosa vuoi che sia una canzone".
The lyrics and music are by Vasco himself (who plays the 6 and 12-string acoustic guitar on the record) and the arrangements by the faithful Gaetano Curreri, while in the track "ed il tempo intanto crea eroi" Maurizio Solieri appears, still today a guitarist and friend of Mr. Rossi.
The themes touched in this work are diverse: from politics to social discomfort, from the couple's relationship to sex, the style is the typical songwriter style of the seventies. And this is how Vasco Rossi presents himself, as a committed singer-songwriter who, in the live performances of the era, in addition to his pieces, sits on a stool with a guitar in hand and performs songs by De André and Battisti, honored years later with the splendid version of "amico fragile" and with "la compagnia".
The album opens with the track "la nostra relazione", a classic of ours, in which the theme is that of a love story now at its end "for the boredom that we have always carried within us", it continues with "e poi mi parli di una vita insieme", a track I would define as "feminist", in which the protagonist addresses his girlfriend, inviting her to rebel and fight "against those who want you like this, innocent and banal woman, always the same woman for not understanding woman to marry.. woman to go out with". In "ambarabaciccicoccò" there is all the anger expressed with irony towards those who still believe that politics can change things "and meanwhile you continue to age always convinced that the best years are yet to come", a concept that will be partially resumed in "stupendo" in '93. The best track on the album is without a doubt "jenny è pazza", the topic addressed is the marginalization of the different, it is said that the lyrics were written by Vasco after being expelled from the theater group he was part of due to a severe nervous breakdown "Jenny can't stay anymore, she ruins people's morale, Jenny is crazy, some even say this".
The album closes with the instrumental and melancholic "ciao". This work is in my view a little gem, the rock turning point is just around the corner, Guido Elmi and the Steve Rogers Band will arrive, and Vasco will abandon the singer-songwriter style, apart from a few sporadic episodes, "Sally" comes to mind, a JENNY twenty years older.
The boredom and the outcry, the fear of a normal life and daily routine are immense and explode in the desire for a "reckless life."
A small gem, "Ciao," a piece without singing, just piano, a melancholic farewell on seventh atmospheres, a lump in the throat and a nostalgic flutter of the heart.
"...what do you think a song is?" reflects the genuine desire to communicate emotion and youthful vigor.
"'Ambarabaccicciccoccò' is Vasco’s ironic masterpiece criticizing rigid beliefs while poking fun at himself."
Vasco eliminates the overabundance of material and goes straight to the essence, freeing himself from pleonastic circumlocution.
This '...ma cosa vuoi che sia una canzone...' might seem like a raw work, at times perhaps a bit rhetorical and disillusioned, but at the same time wrapped in a genuineness, in a fascinating naivety.
