1993, it’s now full summer. It’s really hot, especially if you have long hair, but our five guys don’t seem to care, they are recording their album. They are the Timoria and this isn't their first album. But this one is different, this is something else. This is the concept, the Opera with a capital "O", they are all convinced of it, they have worked hard on it and they are enthusiastic. They know that if they don’t make it big now, things are unlikely to improve in the future. Their energy is at its peak, this is the right moment, and they must seize it.
21 tracks, 73 minutes describe this journey which is not just that of Joe, the protagonist of this album that feels like a movie, but the intimate journey of a generation that typically does not identify with society. But, unlike "20 years ago" when "everything was different", now you can't stop the world, the winds of the past are gone. The '68 is a long way gone, now hardly anyone gets angry even if (for about a year) they have been rummaging through the closets of Italian politics to find shamefully corrupt skeletons. The only option is to escape, and the easiest way is often drugs. That’s exactly where they start from, the "mad blood" of those who "don’t know whether to flee or chase something", they abandon themselves and ask how they ended up in such a miserable state. The drug journey hasn't led far; it only made them run to standstill (to quote U2). The road must be another. And from the detox center, where they teach you "to never heal", the journey starts, they escape from "Lombardy" "Towards the east", a fantastic, dreamlike east that is more something else, something distant rather than a geographical location. Here Joe immerses himself in a spirituality that leads him to the utopian "City of the Sun" and that of war, in the constant opposition of values, good and evil coexist in him "like snakes in love". Even in this imaginary east, there is no shortage of nostalgia, temptations, doubts, and the quest for freedom, whatever that may be. Perfection. Joe will eventually get there, thanks to Eva, whose beauty will save the world. Thus "Joe's thirst is quenched" and "The warrior" can return because now he has also learned "to love his pain" and to "give meaning to useless days”.
It’s also a journey from a musical point of view, as the album ranges from energetic, pounding hard rock to dreamy, suspended atmospheres, which aptly depict the need for otherness from social standardization. It moves through melancholic ballads, to tracks that particularly satisfy lovers of low frequencies. And our five are extraordinarily up to the task. Excellent collaborations, including Mauro Pagani, Eugenio Finardi, Candelo Cabezas, accompany a particularly inspired Omar Pedrini, Enrico Ghedi on keyboards, Illorca on bass, Diego Galeri on drums, and Francesco Renga (in my opinion, the best male voice on the Italian scene). You can tell Timoria truly believes in this album, which by the way does not show the 17 years it is about to turn. I believe the reason lies in its genuineness, despite being at the same time very carefully crafted in lyrics, music, and even the details of the booklet. "Viaggio senza vento" is steeped in literature, philosophy, and spirituality. It owes a lot especially to the old Herman H., but also to many others, including Tommaso Campanella, Fedor Dostoevsky, Dino Campana.
