King Raam - Retribution (Iran, 2011)

Raam is an Iranian/Canadian musician, writer, and podcast host. He began his musical career as a singer/songwriter/founder of Hypernova, a post-punk band from New York that originated in the undergrounds of Tehran in the early 2000s. After the disbandment of Hypernova, he chose to pursue a solo career under the name King Raam. Raam was born in the coastal city of Bushehr, Iran, and moved to Eugene, on the west coast of the United States, with his family at a young age. He later emigrated to Canada in 1998. A few years later, he returned to Iran and founded the band Hypernova, the first rock band to emerge from Iran and sign a record deal, touring with major artists worldwide. Hypernova paved the way for a new generation of aspiring underground Iranian artists.

After Lobotomizer, Killer makes way for Gebhardt, a creative multi-instrumentalist drummer and house banjo boy. To get warmed up a bit, they release two mini records that are gathered in their second long release (although not an "official new album"). Rough and raw, but a little less so. Although Bent's great melodic talents are still hidden beneath several layers of chaos, there is a sense of evolution. In these cases, it's called transitional work, and here it hits the nail on the head. The guys, amidst beastly screams and some experimentation, find a way to cover the Mamas and Papas, giving a taste of their prodigious versatility. Thus, once Geb is integrated, the classic lineup (the most... beautiful) releases these 8 songs for Rut and soon after experiences an explosion of creativity that will place them at the top of the independent rock scene, at least in Europe, for about fifteen years.
