David Robert Jones was born in Brixton, a southern suburb of London, on January 8, 1947.

His mother, Margaret Mary Burns, known as "Peggy," was a cashier at a cinema, while his father, Haywood Stenton Jones, was a former military man who had recently returned from the front and later became the director of the Bromley prison.
